yes, you see a lot of prot mission creep, especially with the use of the word 'christian' in nonwestern countries, but recognition that catholicism is the still-running engine at the heart of whatever people label 'western' isn't absent either

this stuff is sort of weighing on my mind because i read a book recently, an enormously interesting and relevant academic book by a scholar i admire, but it suggested that catholicism is globally heavily stigmatized vis-à-vis american prot culture and i'm really not sure that's the whole story

we've had a couple of lastname firstname presidents (nothing too innovative, but that's what lyndon and woodrow are), but i can't really imagine it happening now, and i'd expect someone with a traditional muslim name like barack to actively have an advantage

i'm joking about the christian nationalism and actively leaning into the stigma, but it's interesting that saints' names still have enormous cultural currency simply because they're the cosmopolitan option

it's not intuitive to imagine someone with a lastname firstname as POTUS or a world-famous novelist, you automatically imagine them going for the 'miss americana' types of fame and not cosmopolitan cultural fame

it's so funny because these names are actively a stigma, you instantly know that someone named "taylor swift" is from a pretentious, non-urban american family with aspirations to waspdom (even though she's also german, italian, etc) and absolutely not british or urban well-connected american

i think there's a bit of a masonic pride-in-one's-work element in the american version, the 'hunter' type blue-collar occupation names never really featured in the british version of it

it's interesting how you can see the etiology of it so clearly, 1700s england had a massive craze among the gentry to give kids last names as first names, but then it died out and they reverted to saint names but it had already spread to the new world, where it never went away

i hate to use the word 'lindy' but saint names are the archetypical instance of lindyness. but you have to actually believe or it's pointless and will fall apart (see what i just posted about my brother and our atheist dad)

it's because our dad went too far with an extremely continental-europe-coded name for him and he probably resented it a lot because all his male children have the anglo and/or irish names prop hates

depiction doesn't equal endorsement. portraying the bad thing in glowing heroic visual language doesn't equal endorsement. jacking off to the bad thing doesn't equal endorsement. endorsement does NOT exist

and those are pretty uncommon outside high-end escorts/sugarbabies and 'softer' forms of pornography like onlyfans producers and naked streamers who don't actually have to touch another person, so they're often relying on those instead
