“The problem with defending the purity of the English language is English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious & riffle their pockets for new vocabulary.” ~ @jdnicoll.bsky.social

I've seen peds react badly, too. Kind of a flailing that puts them in the path of the cyclist. I think it stems from a lot of people genuinely not knowing their left from their right. 😳😬

I've noticed in the park I most frequently walk, no one seems to use bells. The norm is "on your left". Nice, clear, unambiguous.

I like the "Mirror, Window, Door" theory of literature (& of course, film is lit). Good lit must either be a mirror or a window. Really good lit is a door. Great literature is both mirror and window, and truly great literature is all 3 at once. "Universal" stories are a warped mirror, at best.

I play a game with my 6th graders that I call the "No Pronoun Challenge." They each get 100 pipe cleaners, & anytime they are caught using a pronoun, they lose a pipe cleaner. The person with the most pipe cleaners at the end of the day is the champion. They're pipe-cleanerless pretty quickly.

Facebook Marketplace can be soooo weird. Last week my husband saw a post for some "slightly used" N95 masks. We're still trying to figure that one out.

Happy birthday to Terry Pratchett, who wrote the books so full of humanity and righteous fury at the injustices of the world that he made me a better person
the world is poorer for having lost him, but what a legacy he left behind

I'm almost 60 and have spent half my life as a teacher, and I still think this. So, wait, you're saying that is not the case?

My daughter did the same. I wasn't sure it would work, but was very pleased it did.

Here’s the deal: We stop shaming the poor for buying things that may not be essential, and start shaming the rich for making a profit off things that are essential.

"But anyone can do something, right?" Thanks to Neil Gaiman for this heads up. There is a link to the Guardian story on the GoFundMe page.
