Old Berlin all of the typical block lined with a building, and the inside also has layers of buildings creating multiple courtyards (hof) in each block. The result is dense, but feels open and airy with lots of semi-public, activated spaces off the main streets. Some are grand! 1/3

These last two Berlin courtyards (hof) are unique. The white one is a trapezoid, narrower at the far end than where the photographer stands - that makes it look much longer than it is. The other is quiet but with lots of greenery and a wall of poetry, it invites quiet reflection.

Other courtyards (hof) are quite narrow, and these can be actively used. One of these houses a museum and lots of foot traffic, both of these have restaurants. 2/3

It was fine, recommend. The pillow was tiny (my spouse was pleased he'd packed his pillow). The bed was hard enough my arm fell asleep sleeping on my side. Looking forward the same trip home in 2 weeks.

Yup. We gotta drive less to achieve carbon reduction goals. Happily, it's cheaper than EVs, improved quality of life because basic needs and amenities are close by everyone, improves health through better air quality (and physical activity), preserves habitat and farmland, and more.

We need more electric cars, and progress will be reducing VMT (vehicle miles traveled). Until we take that seriously, including fixing land use, electric cars are pure greenwashing.

This seems to be the main village square/intersection in my town. Traffic is calmed by many brick tree planters and smaller brick light-bases. 4 streets and 2 walking streets come together at rather awkward angles (see map). It's a pleasant spot to sit and read a book.

This sandstone cliff shows echos of the buildings for which is was once the back wall. Rooms or closets carved out, hollows to support beams, soot stains where it was the back of a fireplace.

Switzerland is a country with roughly 9 million residents. It's investing CHF 3.5 billion ($3.9b) in public transportation over three years (2026-2028).

There’s a group of kids on the corner selling lemonade. They yell “LEMONADE” at every passing vehicle, but the only people I have seen stop for a drink so far are on foot or bike. There is no shortage of free parking on the street. Maybe this is analogous to local business districts. 😉

While I'm somewhat in favor of traffic cameras for speed enforcement, a system of speed cameras is not entirely race-blind like their proponents suggest. Unsafe streets that encourage speeding are most often placed in neighborhoods with lower incomes.

Summer in #Zürich includes lots of swimming. Today's swimming is in a public badi. The entrance fee gives access to many amenities (slides, showers, bathrooms, diving platforms, restaurants, ping pong tables, +++). This badi afternoon has a bonus amenity of a visitor from MN.

What really happened when Minneapolis upzoned its neighborhoods in the 2040 Plan? We didn't get a lot of duplexes/triplexes, but rezonings enabled more housing than you might think in low-density neighborhoods.

In this atypically personal post, I'm relieved and a bit proud that after 10 months in the not-really-German-speaking city of Zürich, I've learned enough German to pass my B1 test with a "sehr gut" score. 🎉 Now I can renew my residency permit - a process which requires a German certificate.
