i am not some big harris booster by any means but as i have been saying i think people are fooling themselves if they think that there is any outcome to “biden steps down” other than “Harris becomes the nominee”
It was shocking to me that the other editorial writers not only didn’t recognize this, but seemed to even fail to understand that she would be the natural replacement, and they’d need to justify nominating someone else.
That was baffling to me
If Harris can possibly win, then there shouldn't be any hesitation to go with her. Better some chance than none. I can imagine a debate where Trump makes monkey noises, or over reaches somehow, and she crushes him.
all people should have to do is think about how the party will select a nominee if it’s *not* Harris and it should be clear how untenable that option is.
Lots of progressives said Biden's support of Israel threatened unity of the Democratic Party coalition, but the same people don't seem to realize that "muscling out" of Harris would threaten a far worse breach if it deeply offends black voters, and I can't think of a way it wouldn't.
If she were a white man, it would be a given that Harris would replace Biden at the top of the ballot. Nobody would even think of replacing her. Some leading Democrats’ smugly casual and unthinking racism and misogyny do not give me a lot of hope for my party.
i feel like my main contribution to this conversation has basically been to ask people to actually take this seriously as a thing that could happen and give it a real cost/benefit analysis
People pinning for a brokered convention are not prepared for fist fights on the floor of the United Center.
She’s the only other person on the primary ballots, going around that for Big Gretch, Newsom or whomever would be so anti-Democratic that it would splinter the big tent.
Harris would be the only option IMO. I have similar concerns for her that I did with Hilary, which is simply around sexism and people not believing a woman would be better than a criminal man. At this point I hope Biden makes the choice to step back.
Saw one argument that it could be done in a _competent_ political organisation, you could persuade and armtwist. Yeah, and when I was ten, I bet I could've beaten up Goldar if I was a Power Ranger, which is about as useful a statement as "well someone competent could arm-twist"
I have met her and think she’s great. I was surprised by how weak her campaigning was. She got throttled in last Dem primary. Also ironically I don’t think the Veep position sets one up well in the eyes of the public because you have to stay in background so much. Nobody knows her accomplishments.
