He looked at me as if waiting for supporting words, but I couldn't find any. Claus somehow interpreted my silence as an encouragement to continue; he suddenly opened up about his experiences, uncertainties, and fears that formed lasting invisible scars.

What does the @IPCC_CH AR6 say about GHG emission metrics (GWP, GTP, GWP* etc)? This was covered in an in-session workshop at the June #SB58 subsidiary bodies meeting of the @UNFCCC. A nerdy thread on the findings from WGIII from a mitigation perspective🧵1/26 (re-post from twitter, sorry)

What can we do other than stop climate change? 1. Increase access to green spaces. 2. Protect local biodiversity. 3. Increase people’s capability and motivation to engage with nature through education. 4. Minimise the risk of encounters of harmful species in green spaces.

These changes can lead to feedback loops, whereby people lose motivation to interact with nature as they progressively lose contact with nature.

These reduced experiences can come from restricted distributions of species, but also changes in the timing of species’ activities, such as wildflowers flowering or migration of animals. And people may be less motivated to interact with nature when local weather patterns are becoming more extreme.

Climate change is reducing people’s direct experiences with nature. It has the potential to lead to this extinction of experience. We need to understand these impacts as the extinction of experience can have negative impacts on both humans and the environment.

A new extinction is emerging with climate change: the extinction of experience or the progressive loss of interactions people have with nature. This is particularly evident in children.

If we want public transport to be taken seriously in NZ, buses just can’t be 20 minutes late. People lose trust and choose to get back in their cars.

"Natural historians, however, are a dying breed. It’s hard to fund basic natural history because it doesn’t often result in the headline grabbing news items that funders and universities are interested in. But for forecasting, such information is all too regularly a critical gap."

Can ecological forecasts help us in our fight to bend the curve of biodiversity loss?
I argue that forecasting is fundamental in our quest to stem biodiversity loss, providing actionable information. But many challenges persist.

Thanks! I hear you. Rule 5 emphasise that the level of intervention will be context-dependent. In such cases, you'd need to be more proactive in your intervention by helping it get ahead in the presence of invasive species.

Rule No 5 seems pretty key: "Use natural regeneration whenever possible Leveraging natural processes can be more effective and sustainable than planting new trees and can lead to much greater carbon capture and biodiversity gains. And, in fact, it can be substantially cheaper."
