And here's the article I got it from, with a nice description of a fascinating way viruses have affected evolution:

And yes, I was so happy I remembered the alt text on the image, I forgot to add the 🧪

I hope including it here suffices.

This is so important. I stress to new grad students that they are no longer learning facts. They are now learning *how* we know facts to be true (controls, etc) and generating new facts. ‼️Critical thinking and discovery are exactly what AI cannot do. ‼️

In the early Twitter days science types would show up and post when they had a new paper. Wonderful! But real talk y'all: papers take ages to write. So, post about other people's stuff! You read a paper and it was cool! Or you had a question! Or it tied to this other thing! Tag the authors!

Horse walks into a bar, bartender asks, “Why the long face? Are you depressed?” Horse thinks for a sec, “I don’t think I am” and immediately disappears. This joke is about Rene Descartes’ saying “I think therefore I am” but if I told you that first, I would be putting Descarte before the horse.

As I explain here, climate change is not only loading the weather dice against us, it's also replacing some of the numbers with extra 6's and even some 7s and an 8 -- making heatwaves more dangerous, heavy downpours more frequent, droughts longer and stronger, hurricanes intensify faster, and more.

Your periodic reminder that calling aviation biofuels "sustainable aviation fuels" does not magically make those biofuels sustainable. E.g., if the US were to reach its stated goal of 35B gallons of SAF using ethanol, this would require 114M acres of corn, or ***120%*** of current US corn acreage.

I agree overall. One problem is that people need to unlearn Xitter habits; e.g., liking a post doesn't really boost engagement since there's no algorithm–people actually have to engage with a post (quote post, repost, or respond) to boost a post.
