LOL as though the $2 fare (that most bus drivers aren't going to kick you off for if you don't pay) is the critical element that's stopping "gangs" from going to Robbinsdale.

MN was able to address this with the Minnesota Insulin Safety Net Program. Alec Smith was a 26 year old diabetic who died rationing his insulin. His parents and Rep. Mike Howard worked tirelessly to create this program, where insulin users can get a 90 day supply for just $50.

But realistically, if I could charge at home or at work, I'd get an EV without a second thought. We can figure out road trips, and they're infrequent, but 3-5 minutes a week at a gas station is better than an hour at a DC fast charge spot.

Yeah, this is why I stuck with an ICE vehicle instead of an EV. Living in a rented apartment with no real charging infrastructure (I do not trust the regular outlet in the garage to handle continuous load like that well) and nowhere else where I am regularly has good charging infrastructure.

Heads up folks in Minnesota (and the surrounding area). Wildfire smoke is coming into the area in the breeze free hours. Please take all precautions since this will impact everyone.

This is in effect until tomorrow afternoon. Details in link below.

I use it infrequently enough that a doubling of the price would probably only cut down my usage slightly, if at all. But I only use it ~once a month, if that often.

Honestly, I'd be perfectly fine with that. The ability to hail a car from my phone and have it arrive within 15 minutes most of the time, with real-time information on when that vehicle will arrive, is still a legitimate improvement over the old taxi dispatching black hole.

Sometimes. About 85% of it is just wire stories from AP, the Forum, or MPR, but 15% of it is somewhat unique news (almost always east-metro focused.)

My hottest tech take is that what big tech has actually succeeded at more than anything is a complete outsourcing of any and all responsibility for their actions. They've succeeded at building wildly irresponsible tools that get used in wildly irresponsible ways and nobody in power seems to care.

I think the essential part of a system being easy to use is, first and foremost, having a system that's frequent and fast enough to be a reasonable alternative. Otherwise it becomes putting lipstick on a pig.

At the same time, most cities simply don't have good enough transit for people on vacation to reasonably use. Even Las Vegas doesn't have a direct bus from the airport to most of the Strip! And the bus that goes on the Strip is often way over capacity and barely goes faster than a brisk walk.

A lot of transit systems do allow pets in carriers (with service animals allowed to be outside of carriers,) but yeah, there's always going to be limitations like that.

In my experience most of those systems started that way because they were designed before ubiquitous cheap cellular connectivity, so they couldn't rely on vehicles being able to reliably phone home. And there's often not enough money to modernize the fare system either.

As a transit and technology geek I find that very fascinating and cool, but from a UX level that's terrible. Most systems that still use the card as "source of truth" (rather than checking into a central database for each tap) just feed the reload data to the buses each night in the garage.

The one thing that I find a lot of systems don't do well, especially on the bus side, is making it abundantly clear where exactly the bus stop is to get on, and the right reassurances at the bus stop to know you're at the right spot. Many systems even have stop numbers - use them!

I think CityMapper does a pretty good job with it (at least when I used it in London,) though even that IMO doesn't quite go simple enough for someone who's literally never used a transit system before. It also doesn't handle payments as far as I can tell.

Fully agree. Ideally the user experience should be on the level of Uber/Lyft, where you can just go into an app, punch in your destination, get the clear info you need to do the trip, and pay your fare right there in the app - at least as an initial introduction to the system.

The only way to change that is to properly price car trips, especially in urban areas, to account for their full cost (including space used in the city.) It also involves making transit more accessible and more convenient (at least in most of the US, where it's pretty terrible in general.)

Jeb Rach's avatar Jeb Rach @jebrach.com

Yeah - at the end of the day, there's a lot of places where having a car is basically necessary, and once you've paid for all the overhead of a car the gas for an extra trip isn't that much, and a car will almost always be faster than transit in the US.

(Well, at least a lot of the pain points for payment. There's a lot of other pain points that making transit free wouldn't solve, like having frequent, reliable service, clear wayfinding, accurate, easy-to-understand trip planning, etc.)

I think it becomes the opposite - it becomes a "we give it away for free to the poors" rather than "a service that should be worth the cost of admission." Also a lot of the pain points for the average traveler could be mitigated by systems just clearly accepting contactless cards.

Considering I'm stuck with whatever output our apartment's window AC unit (with no timer) can do, and it's impossible for it to keep up if I turn it off/keep it significantly higher while I'm at work... 😐
