How about we give up on the Republic, go straight to Caligula, and skip those guys in between? Or Commodus? One of those freaks. I was reading “History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire,” but it got to be too much during the 2016 campaign.

Ice cream is my department, so if I want cherry ice cream for Father’s Day, I’ll make it. (Recipe from the “Cook’s Illustrated” “How to Make Ice Cream,” 1997.)

My daughter remembers the good things, too. I used to read Pooh stories to the kids, using distinctive voices for every character, including a squeaky falsetto for Piglet. Not too long ago she sent me this. “When I read it, I heard it in your voice.” One of our most touching exchanges.

You and my daughter could have a wonderful conversation! When we marveled at how much stuff we could pack in our unimposing Previa minivan, I pointed out that we hadn’t even used its basement, where the pool table was. She said that puzzled her for several years. Yes, I feel the sting of guilt.

My first thought when I saw this travesty: “This ridiculous display is supposed to make me WANT your product?” Seriously, who is the target market?

What I would have done in the 80s if a friend and I came up with $800 to make a science fiction short: sliced up some 4x8 plywood, wrapped it in aluminum foil, and strapped it to my friend’s beater Datsun. @assbeaters.bsky.social

Bill Lewis led a 5/4/2024 Re-Queening and Splitting Colonies class at our Bee Sanctuary. Besides the obvious benefit of getting more hives, splitting hives makes swarming less likely.

Lucy Barraza taught the Long Beach Beekeepers Beekeeping 101 class at the South 40 community garden 4/6. The morning was chilly, so she used an observation hive instead of opening one of the regular hives for inspection. We've been getting good mileage out of those observation hives!

Found the idiot neighbor kids playing with dad’s bow and target shooting arrows in the park. One shot an arrow straight up, and the other ran to catch it. Game over when he almost did, found a red stripe abraded across his wrist, and began wailing. Years later, physics explained it to me.

You're right. The framers of the 14th amendment couldn't have ever possibly imagined a bigot who'd launch a violent uprising just because he lost an election. They must have been thinking of something else totally.
