Sometimes they have to remind me they don't need my help. Sometimes I have to remind them that they don't need my help. But it's working out great, and they both should know how to cook many of their favorite meals before they are 18.

I started with, "You have to pick 1 meal a week that you want to eat." Then moved to, "Now you get to help make that 1 meal a week!" and now to, "You are making that 1 meal a week." I help as much as they need, but also push back when they ask for help with something that I know they can do.

My 12-year-old is attempting to make breakfast burritos for dinner by himself for the first time. I’m trying not to hover. Encouraging my kids to cook has been one of my projects over the last few years.

If it makes you feel any better (it won't), it was over 100 today and supposed to get up to 106 tomorrow in Salem, OR. This is ridiculous. It's not humid, though, and it cools down at night.

Ha! If you grew up in Salem, you're probably right. He practiced here for ~40 years before he finally fully retired a couple years ago. Growing up, it was almost impossible to go out to a family dinner without someone coming up to our table to say hi to him.

My older son's bar mitzvah was during COVID lockdown times, right as restrictions were starting to get eased a tiny bit. We were allowed to serve food inside but everyone had to eat outside. It was 115F that day, and with the tents and fans we all survived with no heat strokes to be seen.

Brisket has moved from sous vide to fridge and now to oven for the final 2 hours of torturing us with amazing smells before resting and eating. Survived a membership meeting that I ran at my synagogue, taking my older son on a drive to the coast and back later to get him more drive time.
