People who think Biden can step aside smoothly need to read up on game theoretic coordination problems, divisive primaries, and the 1968 elections just as a starter pack.
This all depends on what probability you assign Biden beating Trump. If you think he has a 40-50% chance, sure. If you think he's at risk of dropping down to much lower odds, then even with all those problems it would be worth it as a certain point.
Humphrey was a stronger candidate than Harris would be.
(Each is a wonderful American who would be a very good president. But ya gotta win.)

Not gonna happen but....I think the possibilities would be (1) Harris after a lot of pain and chaos, or (2) Harris by acclamation very quickly. With the latter somewhat more likely.
I've literally had people say "Biden could totally step aside! Look at 1968!" and I'm just thinking "I do not think you are making the point you think you are."
I really doubt George Wallace is going to mount a credible run and I hope to hell Sirhan Sirhan stays out of it. 1968 is in no possible way comparable.
