Agree! Librarians love when the work they've done to support an author with research receives an acknowledgement.

As someone who might end up on some of those pages, I 100% agree.

I've worked in publicity and marketing for many years and do still get a little thrill when a returning author thanks me in the acknowledgments. Since much of our work is done after they are written, it's quite rare to be thanked in print.

Fwiw, most college textbook publishers include a full list of the people (plus their job titles) who worked on a book on the copyright page. Thatβs in addition to any Acknowledgments page the author may add (and usually does, in my experience) that also thanks many of the same people.

When I was near the end of my run at a Law Publisher (not WestLaw), we were moving to remove "vanity pages" (pages crediting Content Management & Production staffers) from our publications. I rarely worked on products with them, but many of my colleagues had.

In addition to giving recognition to people behind the scenes, it also gives an answer to consumers about the cost of books. In addition to giving our moms something to be proud of, it would also give us an answer to that uncle who is always telling us we should make books cheaper.

Especially for freelancers β sometimes even if you don't sign an NDA, there feels like an unspoken pressure to not say you worked on a book unless the author/publisher acknowledges you publicly first! So...how do you advertise? π

This is one of the things I appreciate about Brandon Sanderson's. He acknowledges the army involved: staff at both his US and UK publisher, his in house team(dozens of people), to his alpha/Beta/gamma readers, as well as paid sensitivity/expertise readers. It must be 100 or more folks cited by name.
