First post I’ve seen mentioning protests. I am not American, so genuinely don’t know, but can’t understand why there haven’t, as far as I know, been ppl on the streets in the US since this latest SCOTUS decision? I look at pro democracy protests in France, Germany, Georgia, Israel, even Iran, and…?

Completely agree. My point wasn’t that either should withdraw. I just noted that in all the chat about B withdrawing (much of which I disagree with), I hadn’t seen mention of H poss withdrawing. It was a comment about what is being discussed and what not, not a suggestion that it should happen

Agree. But they have to do anything possible to win, incl setting aside self-interest. I think B withdrawing is more dangerous electorally than H doing so, and that H withdrawing may make some waiverers more likely to vote Biden. I don’t expect/want this, but interesting to me it’s not discussed

Yes, as I said in my first comment. But Biden isn’t going to withdraw either and plenty of people are talking about that

I know. I meant Harris could stay now but announce she’s not standing (or ruling herself out, whatever the correct terminology is) in the Nov election, allowing him to stay in the race with a VP pick more palatable to voters worried about his age, since ppl don’t seem to rate her (not nec my view)

I haven’t seen any suggestion that Harris could/would step down? I have no knowledge of how this would work, would it allow Biden to appoint a new, more popular VP? I assume Harris isn’t going to do this (and I’m not suggesting she should), but seems odd to me that I haven’t seen it mentioned?

Looking for recommendations of short stories with a first person plural narrator and would be grateful for any tips? (My first not repost post and it genuinely took me a couple of minutes to work out how to do it…!)

Yes. Typical of him. He sounds to me like a QC who weighs his every word, and it’s as much with an eye to the future as whatever immediate situ he is talking in. In a closer election, it would be a risky approach - often a possible deficit in the present to recoup in future - but he can afford it

Do you think it’s that she’s black more than that she is a woman? Or both? (Genuine qu). What I see (from afar) of the red states seems to be v heavily and systematically targeting womens’ rights. Appreciate this is Dems but still…

Yes I think so too and me too - though I’ve never encountered urchins! It definitely reflects a source of stress in my chronically late and stuff-everywhere life. For me it’s always more and more stuff and running out of capacity/time. Never had an exam stress dream but then I always liked exams :)

I’m not sure. It’s obvs not for the cash. But where’s the fun in betting when you already know the outcome so there’s no element of chance, and you can’t, for obvs reasons, brag later about the accuracy of your prediction? Though to be fair none of that seems to have stopped the others so…?

Loved this. I will be rereading Alice Munro now. Shock waves rippling out over a whole life from a single dramatic event, scope, and the glimpsed event that persists. Yes! Great inspiration for an idea I have been eyeing out of the corner of my eye for a while but not dared try yet, thank you

Exactly my first reading of this line - I thought it might be an insider phrase meaning sthg like ‘boots on the ground’. Echoes of trying to buy trainers in LA once and having great difficulty explaining to American friends what I meant. I nearly ended up with some sort of specialised baseball shoe

Parallels long 19thC in Europe I think - explosion of literacy, pamphlets etc leading to panic and repression by monarchies, nobility (among many other factors obvs). I would love to read something tracking the elite v commons clashes from that period into current political trends

They are 2 separate points. Also, by not qualified to form an opinion, I meant not informed enough on that specific point to want to post my opinion online. Based on their posts, OP is certainly not better informed, just more willing to post an opinion on a subject they do not fully understand.

I’m not qualified to form a view on that. But Hamas absolutely does not = IRA 30 years ago. Not remotely

Thank you. And the follow up to this, if Qatar does have leverage but is unwilling to use it, would then I guess be whether international pressure could usefully be placed on Qatar…?

I asked this elsewhere but did not get a response. Is there no way to pressure Hamas internationally? Does Qatar have any leverage? Surely most Middle Eastern states apart from Iran badly want a ceasefire?

(Deleted ‘in the last few weeks’ as ran out of space but, again for clarity, I mean in the last month or so. I feel like I keep reading that a ceasefire is imminent, Israel, Egypt, US, possibly Qatar all in agreement, then it gets rejected?)

My (limited) understanding is that Israel has made reasonable ceasefire offers which Hamas rejected - is this correct? Is there any likelihood of Israel being able to formulate an improved offer that Hamas and the Israeli public would accept? Also is there scope for pressure on Hamas via Qatar? Ty

I suspect this is because in most cases the first draft is, ideally, unfettered creativity. So, the essence of the work. Whereas later drafts are the editor coming along to tidy up - if much of the first draft is removed, I wonder what spark remains?

This really struck me visiting the Treasures of the British Library exhibition last year - first and working drafts from Jane Austen to The Beatles, where you can trace on the page the evolution of the work in the artist’s mind. Something we presumably will no longer be able to access.

Oh, that is ever so slightly heartbreaking. I read recently that, in scans, dogs’ brains light up in the same areas as those in human children’s brains when looking at their parents/owners. Wish I could remember where. I do think my dog considers me to be her mother, but of course I can’t know that

My dog knows me as mummy - but that’s because that’s what my son calls me. And my dog training skills don’t even extend to stopping her from eating poo, let alone teaching her a different name for me from the one my son uses.
