The two alarming aspects of yesterday's vote for me: 1. The RN's 2nd-round ceiling has become a 1st-round floor. 2. The French right considers the far left more of a danger than the far right. There are various historical parallels here, though the two extremes represent different threats today.

The second is the scariest, and strongly suggests we will return to the 1930s - or a version of it WITHOUT a strong Left.

With French right you mean LR, or the Macron folks? I've seen the Macron camp a bit split on this, but mostly in support of tactical NFP voting in the second round. But I'm guessing LR is mostly all-in for the RN...

It's worth noting that the continued strength and political relevance of a radical left is something of a French exception (Spain also comes to mind). It was always either the junior partner in the center-left coalition or outside it on the fringes. 1/2
