No 'neither ... nor' here: 'we call on our fellow citizens in every constituency to vote to ensure the defeat of the RN candidate.' Worth noting because the lead signatories are by no means all of the left- e.g. Pierre Nora, Mona Ozouf.

thanks, I guess then we're maybe talking 10-15% of their MPs, enough to make a loud noise not enough to threaten their majority. Should be interesting.

I am aware that Dyson and Wetherspoons did, not aware of James Timpson. Happy to be proven wrong. I’d be surprised at Timpson if he hung about with those two clowns tbh

I would say affluent sounds wealthier than comfortably off. Affluent is inheriting quite a good chunk from parents.

So his dad backed it, good catch. I assumed from his letter to employés he hadn’t. My mistake.

I’m not upset :) I’m just saying that there are many stated Remainers who sat on some of these councils and as such it isn’t evidence of anything regarding position on Brexit. He could be a Brexiteer by the way, I have no clue. All I know is his dad wasn’t.

The fact that he joined a government committee post-Brexit about helping business deal with it does not make him pro-Brexit.

I know as was Roger Carr who was Remain and signed a letter to that effect before the referendum

Loads of people sat on those councils post-Brexit, including Roger Carr who was pro-Remain

I tend to agree with Mel tbh, I doubt his Brexit views will come into it.

I can already feel that the Tory leadership race is gonna give me an ulcer, because of the number of people on the centre and left who have neither read a history book nor the news saying things like “hopefully the Tory party will move to the right”.

Look, it’s great to make “key” jokes about Timpson being in the cabinet but it’s also a clear sign that this government is not just for the well-heeled.

This is my peak optimism thing with Starmer. There are acres of things I wish he'd do but don't think he will, but I do think he knows how to run a team of professionals and get things done. God knows it'd make a change.

When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.

One of the things I most noted when I moved to the USA is the almost systematic refusal to understand that other people have other names for things. Example: the bathroom. “Are you going to take a bath?” Uh, no, it’s the name of the room. “Don’t you mean the RESTroom?”

This thread is full of errors (a consequence of the fact that the Tory rulebook is not available online). No, the 100 is not fixed. No, no members of the 1922 “lost their seats” - there are no members of the 1922 when parliament is dissolved. There are fresh elections every term.

For those who don't know: this is James Timpson of Timpson key cutters/shoe repairs/dry cleaners. His company employs ex-convicts and even runs work training programmes in prisons. Genuinely inspired choice.

#OTD 5 July 1946 Micheline Bernardini models the first modern bikini at a swimming pool in Paris. Designer Louis Réard's named the swimsuit the bikini because four days earlier the US tested a nuclear weapon at the Bikini Atoll & he wanted to grab headlines.

I think it needs to be made clear to people what they are actually doing and how their vote matters. It is never explicitly stated that way but perhaps should be.

A strange thing about doing this job for a long time is you spend most of election night in a state of extreme tension going “god, Jim has lost his seat, how sad”. Then the next evening the new government makes a great and humane appointment to prisons minister you go “oh! I’m happy Jim lost”.

i refuse to believe that americans who watched the debate think that biden’s first 15 minutes are somehow stronger evidence of old age decline than falling asleep, *in public*, DURING YOUR OWN FUCKING CRIMINAL TRIAL, *IN COURT IN FRONT OF THE JUDGE AND JURY*, but, you know, i’m not a columnist.
