the independence process that started in 2012 is finally dead and buried, that looks certain. And Sánchez has been both its assassin and undertaker. Remember the first rule of Spanish politics: Pedro Sánchez always wins.

Junts, ERC and CUP still on 58 seats, the main nationalist parties 10 short of an overall majority, and still short if they take 3 from the fascist allianca.

That would be huge. A total vindication of the Sánchez approach. Not that he’ll get any credit for it in the rest of Spain.

What percentage of the vote do we need to be pretty certain of the final result?

I’m hoping the differential turnout between Barcelona and Tarragona and Lleida and Girona means the polls are wrong.

We don’t yet know the result of today’s elections in Catalonia but it does look like the big losers are going to be ERC. However, they will probably also decide who governs. And that will mean making a call on whether independence takes precedence over everything else.

The Spanish nationalist right’s lawfare attack on Pedro Sánchez will turbocharge the Catalan separatist narrative of a deep state, centred on the judiciary, determined to keep Francoism alive. It’ll also galvanise the left in support of Sánchez. The Spanish nationalist right is thick as shit!
