When I was in 7th grade my friend group decided to kick me out but I was slow to catch on. I remember the moment I realized it; I literally had to pick up my lunch tray & figure out where else to sit. Settled on this girl from my gifted and talented program. We've been best friends for 40 years.

My friend Cristen. The most caring and generous and heartful person I've ever met and 90 pounds of pissed off wildcat if you fuck with her friends. Seriously the truest friend I've ever had. Everyone should have someone like Cristen in their life.

My vet, I suppose. He’s a fundamentally decent person who has tremendous engagement with his work. His affection for his animal patients is obvious, and he will fight like hell to help them. He’s seen me and my cats through some very rough times and is always steady as a rock.

My best friend of over 25 years. He's literally been through the wars and so much more, and still came out the other end to be the incredibly kind and resilient man he is today. He's also smart as a whip, and a truly gifted writer, not just journalist. I look forward to reading his published memoir.

here's one of mine: my philosophy professor in undergrad, who told me--seriously, generously--"I believe in you. I believe you have things to say, once you find the confidence to say them." he was one of the first people aside from my parents who made me think being me was a good thing.

My father's never been in my life. A few years ago a former coworker who I didn't really have a relationship with outside of work texted me on Father's Day to say that they hoped I was having a good day, and that it can still be hard. I've never really had an issue with it, but it was so genuine...

my best friend who I’ve known since we were 12 is the person I love most in the world because he’s the sweetest, funniest, most gentle person and supportive person I’ve ever met. Thankful every day to have a guy friend like that in a world full of shitty dudes.

My uncle is so smart and cool in this quietly confident way. He's a mechanical engineer and old stoner and his wife is a nurse and a ridiculous firecracker who lights up every room she enters and they have a home full of dogs and cats they rescued I love them both so much.

I had a partner for 18 months, until just about a year ago, and we just know each other so deeply & so well that we have remained the best of friends ever since. we're both autistic and have similar communication styles & enjoy when the other infodumps at the other about something interesting to us

A delight I don’t see enough of (geography) is my wife’s best friend since age 6. Introduced with the trepidation of any bff/fiancé meeting but started trading book recs and Ed Grimley jokes from moment 1. And we both agree that we’d do anything for said spouse, so that’s solid common ground.
