The local transit thing contracted with Uber to replace one of the regular but more out of the way lines with (free) on-demand shuttle buses. It worked okay.

This is exactly the same strategy Uber is pursuing with their food side. Their VC backers are pulling out and they have to figure out how to be profitable. How can they be profitable? By inserting themselves as middlemen in operations that existed before them and will exist after them.
