This morning we published some research showing that millions of Americans couldn't prove their citizenship to register to vote, as some Republicans are demanding. Check out the NPR writeup here: www.npr.org/2024/06/11/n...
I’m guessing there more US-born citizens who have a harder time putting their hands on paperwork than immigrants. US citizens take their citizenship for granted. The GOP wants to end birthright citizenship. Can you prove you’re a citizen? Can you prove your parents were?
It’s disheartening that there are so many people, well-meaning or not, who simply can’t [won’t] understand the burdens the post-911 & now GOP state is imposing on people to be able to function as law-abiding citizens. Administrative burden is massive.
🙋♀️Misplaced/lost/destroyed documents; burned down courthouses; home births… Prohibitive cost/processes for getting copies of documents that *can* be replaced. And that’s just a few relatively common situations. Add the residency “proofs” req for a DL/state ID & it gets difficult for many more people.
