I've long felt that candidate endorsements, telling candidates to end their campaigns, and similar prescriptivist activities, are paternalistic and beyond the scope of what newspapers should be doing. News orgs should be giving people info to make their decision, not trying to make it for them.

It's more than just that the New York Times is failing to rise to the moment, it's like it can't even bring itself to take the moment seriously at all. It's downright nihilistic.

Why do people not realize that EVERY social movement gives rise to a certain amount of idiocy? If it's a good social movement it will also give rise to insight, but the idiocy is just part of the human condition. It is not remarkable, and it is absolutely not a reason to reject a social movement.

I mean, US bread is the worst (they also add sugar for some reason?) but UK bread is also pretty terrible.

Sliced bread is actually the worst idea. Pre-slicing bread exposes far more surface area, causing the bread to go bad faster. This "innovation" is one of the reasons American bread is so bad. Manufacturers have to pump the bread full of bleaches and preservatives to compensate!

AWS is popular because it's stable, year after year. Who would trust their key infrastructure to someone as mercurial as Musk? This is definitely a domain where his personality is a huge negative.

If it's quadrants, why not make each square a 2x2 grid, and color the appropriate quadrant of that grid to indicate quadrant, and just have two colors, one for win, one for lose.

Yes! It's the circularity that's infuriating! But that circularity is a common problem in US political journalism. E.g. when they talk to a less well-known candidate and ask something like, "if you have such great ideas, why has your campaign gotten so little traction with the media?" Ugh!

It's not the conversational element that makes it better than letters to the editor, it's the colocation (and cotemporariness) with the article.
