Writer, publisher, lover of Portsmouth. Will try to keep this account to the creative stuff and leave the arguing on twitter... If you are rude, aggressive or foolish, I will block you - life is too short to waste on bad vibes.

I can understand why. They were so energised by what they saw as a real possibility of change with Corbyn's brand of politics. Starmer offers very little in the way of the structural change the young need to give them a chance to thrive.

Thanks. Interesting. So, no real evidence for it really. Just a couple of tiny hints that are non-clinchers. Good to know. ๐Ÿ˜€

I'm reading Tolkien after many years and just remembering how I envisioned the elves as basically finer, more elevated versions of human beings - which is pretty much what his essay "Tree and Leaf" says. Does anyone know where this(in my opinion) silly notion of pointy ears comes from?

Rereading The Lord of the Rings gives insights into my first read, when I was 9. I remember suddenly identifying with Frodo when he woke sick in bed at Rivendell. I wasn't a sickly child, but this experience was familiar in a way horseback chases weren't. That was the moment I identified with him.

A network of Russia-based websites masquerading as local American newspapers is pumping out fake stories as part of an AI-powered operation that is increasingly targeting the US election, a BBC investigation can reveal.

Which makes me wonder of there'd need no ID requirement how different the results would have been.

Googleโ€™s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoftโ€™s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

Yes, "the Prime Minister" is the name of the office not the person. It's not used like "Professor Smith" or "Mr Jones". There is no form with a drop-down box next to your name field with the options: Mr/Mrs/Ms/Mx/Dr/Prof/Prime Minister. To use it thus is a category mistake, surely?

Have you considered that we actively despise nobility as a core founding principle, and like seeing you people wince about it?

Well, since there are a lot of rather slippery and disreputable knights in the uk who got their title for favours done for the powerful, I can see the equivalency. Plus, a fake military title is essentially what knighthood is, these days.

Oh dear. I've no interest in US / UK rivalries. They seem to come from insecurities on both sides: for the British the feeling of having been superceded by America & thus pettifogging, and for Americans a misplaced insecurity about one of the mother cultures. I think I'll mute this thread, now.

But I should add this os contextual. If someone from a radio station in the US is interviewing me about Conan Doyle and wanting to educate others about his life, I guess it's my duty to set them right if they're struggling with the terminology. Some would be pleased to get it right, especially fans.

Sure. In fact I'm an anti- monarchist. But I'd be interested to know who "we" are? For example, I refer you to this post I did a few days back... seems there are plenty of sycophants on your side of the water, too... ๐Ÿ˜€

So, Sir Elton John got his title for projecting a positive image of the uk across the world. Meanwhile, tory donors basically buy the honorific with their donations. Neither example became nobles. Think of it as the uk equivalent of the Presidential Medal of Honour. ๐Ÿ˜€

Sure, nice answer, me too. Having a knighthood isn't nobility though. It's basically a badge that says "this guy is good at something" or "this person is useful to the ruling class". Imagine it as a boy scout badge. It doesn't enter you into nobility. So thanks for making my point! ๐Ÿ˜€

My concern is Farage will now be targeting small "c" conservative voters in the red wall - the same lot he went after for brexit. Insular, nationalistic, lower educational attainment ( this is what the demographics show of brexiteers). Keir will have to show he's making their lives better quickly.

I've studied Conan Doyle closely. The Portsmouth-based writer today who reminds me of him most is Tade Thompson. Sweeping storyline, muscular adventure, cross-genre, disciplined and a medical man. Been thinking about this a lot, and think he is the nearest we get to him. An honour to have met him.

I was interviewed in the US about Arthur Conan Doyle, and they kept referring to him as Sir Doyle. I get it, they're not used to titles like this, and it seems disrespectful to use the first name... but it gets quite wearing to keep correcting it... so, good on you for pointing it out!

I think the only way to do this is to complain vociferously over and over to the bbc. It may not male a difference, but it might undermine his claims of being undermined by the msm if it's pointed out how much cover he gets.

Yes. Farage will also be working on race and lgbtq+ issues to go for the full house, but in an implied way so he can appeal to more conservative-minded ethnic minorities too. There's a dark future out there for some minorities, for sure.

Interestingly, that's exactly what I've been doing for last 10 years. Literally taking my books to a market stall and selling them face to face. My pitches are polished and slick and I have made a living from it... but I'm getting tired of this and am now looking for new product with wider reach...

Well, with the end of this stage of the great battle, I thought I should publish a Concession Speech of the Nameless One on Hearing of His Defeat.

Enjoy all... @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com, another moment of daftness to savour - and at least to enjoy a moment of victory.

Yes. Combine the split right vote & it would have been a huge win for Penny Mordor. For years I complained the left vote was split between Lib Dems & Lab. Sobering to think how big the split right vote is in some areas, especially of lower education. Farage will target the less educated left, now.

Labour did so well because Nigel Farage split the right vote. Makes you wonder why we bothered with a brexit ref... Farage will now be seeking to consolidate small "c" conservative Labour voters, working on identity politics, as he did with brexit. Starmer has a small window to make a difference.

Yes, and it will now be seen as a viable alternative for those racists in the tory party who up to now weren't willing to break former voting habits. There are those who don't like brown people in charge - the Deep Conservative element. They will be reviewing their options now.

Peculiar to think that David Cameron chose to take the UK through all that pain of Brexit in order to prevent the Tory party being in exactly the position it finds itself in now. So much energy wasted on identity politics, so many opportunities for the uk lost.

I'm hoping that at some point the idea that rising house prices is good for the economy will he challenged. House prices rising above the rate of inflation cause an absurd drain on the economy and only serve to enrich banks. That whole narrative needs to change.
