Yes, very smart, recognizing that the main reason to read The Great Gatsby is the information contained in each sentence.

That IS what the AI bros think, though. Every piece of art is just data to be mined, so it makes sense that the human brain should want to simplify the mining process just like a machine would.

Has the podcast ever covered young peoples strong preference for graphic novels? Including the graphic novelization of classics from an older time, like the babysitters club or sweet valley high. It might be a form of this linguistic simplification, but also adds a lot of visual context.

The only reason to read Gatsby is literary masochism.

Imagine characterizing the famously short and easy to read Great Gatsby as “difficult” in the first place. Of all the books to pick for an ad for this…

Tech bros cannot comprehend reading something for the joy of reading or the art of a turn of phrase. And they seem intent on destroying art.

That’s worse than reading the cliff notes and saying you read the book. It strips out the meaning.

This will probably sell four copies, but what kills me is how condescending this is to potential readers. For around 20-25 years we’ve had tech companies market to people by telling them the world is too hard and they’re too dumb to understand it without help and this is just the latest example.
