On the contrary: one necessary condition for the Court's appalling immunity ruling is their certainty that Biden will not abuse the powers they just gave him. That's for Trump alone (and his successors.)

Ordering this withdrawal is an official act, since the President is Commander in Chief. His motives for doing so, and in particular any connection to the recent deposit from the government of Cuba, are inadmissible. So: yes.

when you vote for President you are voting for a coalition rather than a person. the right understands this very well, which is why evangelicals lined up behind Trump.

“Trump would never do this” “Trump factually did do it during his first term, confirmed by 17 sources” “… okay but people didn’t obey the order so it doesn’t count, Trump would never do it for real” a whole entire genre of news story and op-ed, even now

If you're looking for some digestible (if infuriating) background on how the right wing corrupted the US judicial system, I recommend @propublica.bsky.social's podcast "We Don't Talk About Leonard."

Hate to say it, but climate activists now need to care a whole lot about reforming the courts.

"how could the DNC do this to us??!?" is one of my least favorite left-wing conspiracy theories. if the DNC were so fucking competent to arrange the outcomes of dozens of individual elections each independently administered by state-level authorities, no Republican would ever be President.

I don't actually think the DNC is all that responsible for Clinton or Biden being the nominee. Primary voters genuinely thought they were the strongest candidate to beat Trump!

(I know it's in vogue to hate on John Kennedy, and he was personally unpleasant, but credit where due: he was the sort of politician who would go to Mississippi to give a speech in which he expressed support for school desegregation.)

Why did Dewey nearly defeat Truman in 1948? It's a puzzle, unless you consider the possibility that "it's racism."

like, “why did Reagan go to a spot near where three civil rights workers were murdered a mere sixteen years previous to campaign on ‘states’ rights’” is not a huge mystery when you consider the possibility that “it’s racism”

All of the nepo babies in comics are newspaper strip artists who were trained to take over from their fathers since they were knee high to a grasshopper. It’s not nepotism, it’s the family business. You’re an old man, writing and drawing a comic that your dad made about you being a baby

Something the left on here needs clearer thinking about is the nature of complicity and moral purity. There are some institutions where any participation would require apology. But the NYT isn’t one of them, and moral purity is overrated anyway: stop caring so much about your self conception.

"Terrorists don't have rights." "Criminals have no rights." "Immigrants have no rights." Everybody has rights, or they're not rights. Privileges granted on the sufferance of the state aren't rights. They aren't protection, they're a threat to ensure compliance.

Is this my favorite choice ever? No. I would rather face different candidates on both sides, and if I got to choose one to magically replace, it would not be Biden. Given that fact, I could either go off and start writing fanfic about my preferred world, or do my very best in this one.

Either he will withdraw (which seemed unlikely right after the debate, and has seemed more and more unlikely as time goes on), or he won't. Us randos have nothing to say about this. As before, that's not because THE FIX IS IN!!!, but because the primaries are over.

Taney's Court had only a fraction of the power and authority over American politics & society that Roberts' Court does 1/

The 14th Amendment says if you were involved in an insurrection you can't be president. SCOTUS said they won't allow anyone to enforce that because of reasons they made up. The Constitution doesn't say the president is immune from criminal law. SCOTUS decided he is because of reasons they made up.

Just saw another display name in "fancy" letters (they look like they're from a typewriter) and you should know that screen readers do not treat those as normal letters and read the whole word. They read the name of each individual character. Every single time.
