This is me and Manny at the end of the UCLA #EMCA 'bootcamp' (CA Advanced Summer Institute) in 2004 - 20 years ago, almost to the day.

RIP Manny, and thank you Stephan.

You never know where a conversation might take you 💬🙏

Today, Stephan asked if I could pop into his office.

He had brought me a copy of the 'Lectures.'

I’m so grateful to him, and so happy to have met someone, in very unexpected circumstances, who knew Manny, and knows #EMCA

As many will know, Manny Schegloff passed away earlier this year. Stephan wrote a note for me to pass to John Heritage: “I will remember his smile, his kindness to me, his conversation (!). Would you say that his former publisher remembers him with more than fondness?” 5/7

I told Stephan that the 'Lectures' were now incredibly hard to find, and that my copy had actually been stolen in 2014. 4/7

Stephan played a huge part in the publication of the 'Lectures' (the #EMCA 'bible') since, despite it being a *gigantic* book - and, at ~1500 pages, possibly not one that would be enormously profitable! - he and Manny made it happen.

It turned out that, as a previous Director at Blackwell, Stephan met one of the co-founders of conversation analysis, Emanuel Schegloff.

Manny & co-founder Gail Jefferson were working to publish Harvey Sacks’s lectures - the third, and sadly deceased, co-founder of #EMCA.

Sometimes, connections come in unexpected places. This is me and Stephan Chambers, Director of the LSE Marshall Institute. We met because of our roles at LSE, so I didn't expect him to start our meeting by saying, “you’re a conversation analyst!” And then the story got poignant. 🧵 1/7

In episode 37 of our podcast, James McElvenny interviewed Michael Lynch to discuss the history of Conversation Analysis in general and also the role of Emanuel Schegloff (1937-2024) in particular.

"...the belief that there is nothing there to be discovered. Yet Schegloff repeatedly and painstakingly demonstrated that beyond this “implacable familiarity” lie fascinating and exact orders oforganization of great generality and scope."

2/3 "Schegloff once identified what he termed “the implacable familiarity” of conversational materials as an important obstacle to CA research. This familiarity of the “already known” can lead observers to doubt the point of what is being done and delude researchers into..."

John Heritage makes such important points in his appreciation of Emanuel Schegloff #EMCA

1/3

He "developed the field of CA, not by means of theoretical manifestos, but rather and exclusively through a series of fine-grained empirical studies of actual conduct in interaction."

Blind person here: Garbage. A. Stop using AI for everything, it's drinking my groundwater and isn't competent at interpreting visual media, as we have repeatedly seen evidenced. B. The robot doesn't know why you put that there. Say it's a meme. Even if it identifies it, what does it MEAN?

Very sad news from John Heritage on the death of Emanuel Schegloff:

“It is with great sadness that I write to inform you that Manny Schegloff has died. He was an intellectual giant and a dear colleague who leaves an extraordinary legacy of scholarship.”

I'm finally attending CARM training by @lizstokoe.bsky.social and I'm loving it so far! So exciting to get to understand - through an open, honest account - how someone arrives at building a powerful tool like CARM, and to see how #conversationanlysis makes a real difference in the world😍

A study on what many of us already know: over 75% of internal service work in academia is done by women. The bit that gets me:”The male associate professors in particular made it clear that they actively engaged in evasiveness and did not want to participate if it was not positive for their careers”

"Conversplaining": the explanation of how conversation works, typically to a conversation analyst, in a manner regarded as dismissive, etc. It's definitely a thing, right, conversation analysis community? (with credit & apologies to Kim Goodwin)

Oh, it’s a real thing I’m afraid and it’s been brewing for a while.

Many people, @spavel.bsky.social especially, have been loudly ringing the alarm for product research and designer types, but despite our efforts, exec types get themselves seduced by this same line of thinking

I don’t think it can be emphasized enough that large language models were never intended to do math or know facts; literally all they do is attempt to sound like the text they’re given, which may or may not include math or facts. They don’t do logic or fact checking — they’re just not built for that

Today is my final day as Prof II at University of Southeastern Norway (USN). It's been nine years since my first visit, after Prof Karianne Skovholt's delightful invitation arrived in 2015. Tusen takk to her, to USN, and to everyone I've worked with since then. I'm sure I'll return!

I've received 12 phone calls in the last 7 days. 1 was a scheduled call with my agent, 1 was the music store Sweetwater, 10 were from scammers. We've completely ceded a former primary form of communication to fraudsters.
