This is me and Manny at the end of the UCLA #EMCA 'bootcamp' (CA Advanced Summer Institute) in 2004 - 20 years ago, almost to the day.
RIP Manny, and thank you Stephan.
You never know where a conversation might take you 💬🙏

Today, Stephan asked if I could pop into his office.
He had brought me a copy of the 'Lectures.'
I’m so grateful to him, and so happy to have met someone, in very unexpected circumstances, who knew Manny, and knows #EMCA

As many will know, Manny Schegloff passed away earlier this year.
Stephan wrote a note for me to pass to John Heritage:
“I will remember his smile, his kindness to me, his conversation (!). Would you say that his former publisher remembers him with more than fondness?”

I told Stephan that the 'Lectures' were now incredibly hard to find, and that my copy had actually been stolen in 2014.

Stephan played a huge part in the publication of the 'Lectures' (the #EMCA 'bible') since, despite it being a *gigantic* book - and, at ~1500 pages, possibly not one that would be enormously profitable! - he and Manny made it happen.

It turned out that, as a previous Director at Blackwell, Stephan met one of the co-founders of conversation analysis, Emanuel Schegloff.
Manny & co-founder Gail Jefferson were working to publish Harvey Sacks’s lectures - the third, and sadly deceased, co-founder of #EMCA.

Sometimes, connections come in unexpected places.
This is me and Stephan Chambers, Director of the LSE Marshall
Institute. We met because of our roles at LSE, so I didn't expect him to start our meeting by saying, “you’re a conversation analyst!”
And then the story got poignant.

He "developed the field of CA, not by means of theoretical manifestos, but rather and exclusively through a series of fine-grained empirical studies of actual conduct in interaction."

A. Stop using AI for everything, it's drinking my groundwater and isn't competent at interpreting visual media, as we have repeatedly seen evidenced.
B. The robot doesn't know why you put that there. Say it's a meme. Even if it identifies it, what does it MEAN?

It's definitely a thing, right, conversation analysis community?

I don’t think it can be emphasized enough that large language models were never intended to do math or know facts; literally all they do is attempt to sound like the text they’re given, which may or may not include math or facts. They don’t do logic or fact checking — they’re just not built for that
