Crossbows were very popular among the Finns, used to hunt squirrels. They had blunt headed bolts so as not to damage the pelt. “Squirrel furs were used as currency. We have stopped because it is hard to get them out of the ATM,” she adds, deadpan.

An Ethical Grook I see and I hear and I speak no evil; I carry no malice within my breast; yet quite without wishing a man to the Devil one may be permitted to hope for the best. --Piet Hein

I honestly believe that a lot of conservative strategizing is based on the correct assumptions that liberals would never be as ruthless as they are.

We're overdue for a Thursday night (er, afternoon) throwback. March 2007, having just signed a lease and about to move in. Teeny cracker-box house, two bedrooms, washer/dryer hookups in the kitchen and no dishwasher. Great for us as a childless couple; we moved before firstborn came along.

I won't deny that they (or other obsolete formats) CAN be read/preserved/reconstructed, nor that those who are doing so are providing invaluable service. I do wonder whether anyone w/o "#retrocomputing" in their user bio would say "plenty" of people...and point out that my MOM can read a paperback.

This is the point. Punchcards are also robust and stable, but the means of reading them is largely inaccessible any more.

There is no digital storage format/medium that has held up as well as even the crappiest paperback from the '70s.

My online TTRPG group has inadvertently managed to reschedule our next session for Thursday, starting a half hour before the presidential debate. At first I was disappointed I'd miss it, but it's not like it'll change my vote—and I can get all the postgame analysis and snark from my podcasts anyway.

Anyway, I think my Debate Drinking Game rules from four years ago still hold: if the debate is on, take a drink.

Starting to think about next week's debate. Honestly very surprised DJT agreed to the format/rules—no audience, mic muting, etc.—all of which plays against his style. I'm beginning to wonder whether he plans to subvert the whole event, use it for an entirely different effect than the intended one.

Twenty-five-ish years as a librarian and I still get questions that throw me for a loop. No sir, the university library does not issue passports.

... kind of wasn't designed for him. He toyed with the idea of choosing someone with ADHD, but decided that was hard to document. Finally settled on his own grandfather, who is maybe not a towering scientific icon--but at least there's no possible question that they share the same heritage. (2/2)

15yo was tasked with creating a presentation about a scientist whose "heritage" he shares--examples given included latinx, african american, female. (I think the idea was to give everyone someone in the sciences they could identify with?) Of course, 15yo is a white male, and so the assignment (1/n)

Thursday night throwback: May 2016, this must have been the start of summer vacation. (Yes, summer vacation starts super early in Georgia; we make up for it by starting school again in August.) visiting my mom and the kids raided her costume jewelry and scarves to play dress-up.

Thursday night throwback, eclipse week edition: in 2017 we stayed with cousins in South Carolina and, so help me, went to Bob Jones University to view totality. The day before, the kids made their own t-shirts, using fabric paint and a paper plate for a stencil.

Eiffel Tower. For advance sales, they only open about 4 of maybe 30 time slots. But I snagged 9:30 pm, which is just before sunset in June.

Thursday night throwback: St. Patrick's Day, 2007. We were about to move from an apartment into a house (signed the lease the next day). I prepared the traditional Irish breakfast of green eggs, green grits, bacon, and tea.

Okay, question for the Skyve Mind. I've been getting follows by accts that seem pretty fakey--nothing but reposts, or random quotes from J.S. Mill, Gandhi & Machiavelli, all #hastagged out like #this. So my question is: ignore or block? Report won't do(?); they're fakey but not violating any terms.

I've been digging around in my archived e-mails, and I've come across a number of 15-20 year old slide shows from class sessions I used to teach. It's interesting to see not only how the content would be different today, but how I've leveled up as a designer and presenter.

I have an email from Australia Post notifying me of a package coming my way, originating in Albany, Western Australia. I have absolutely no idea what this might be, and I'm puzzled and intrigued. Right now I'm guessing it's getting loaded on a cargo ship in Melbourne, and I'll see it in a month.

Thursday night throwback: it was four years ago this week that our part of the world went into COVID lockdown. We optimistically set up all our workspaces (2 professionals, 2 elementary schoolers) around the dining room table. As I recall, this arrangement was scrapped before it was ever used.

My quirk is that when there's a book I *know* I'm gonna buy/have already pre-ordered, I try to avoid previews entirely so as to go into the full experience relatively unspoiled. I loved Andoh in the Ancillary audiobook series though!

Thursday night throwback, Pi Day edition: one silver lining to the 2020 pandemic lockdown was that the house we were renting had a huge back lot, absolutely overgrown with blackberries. Whenever we needed to get out, we’d grab a bucket and go pick as much as we wanted. Then we made pie.

The Murderbot Diaries (@marthawells@bsky.social) is one of those rare series where I haven't built up at least some mental imagery of what the characters look like. I actually have more vivid images of ART's interior than of the characters. But I have no quibbles about any of this casting.
