Elon Musk posted on X(Twitter) after our story ran that yep, Tesla didn't have room to set up those GPUs at the time, and they would have been sitting around in a warehouse. Then, after effectively confirming my story, he called me a name. *classic*
Even assuming the "Tesla was not ready for scheduled delivery of hotly in demand chips" story is true: (1) seems like something of a problem at Tesla, and (2) the months-earlier delivery date presumably had cash value, Tesla could have been paid to swap with some other Nvidia customer - but wasn't.
