I look at the charts of years of profit (and more recent years of loss) and just think: what if it weren't a question of profit? what if we were simply pooling risk, and investing the easier years into home hardening and a rainy-day fund?

Look, I'm all for putting climate change on every peril, but derecho is a bit much here. And the links with hail, which is most of the Midwest loss, are shaky at best. Wildfire, sure.
