I don't want some egghead bureaucrat telling me whether there's poison in the water I drink. Ideally I'd want that decided by a 29yo judge who went to a "biblical law school" and does not believe dinosaurs existed, and then to have that decision reaffirmed six years later by the Supreme Court.

Agency staff: oh hey this statute that asks us to do something contains an ambiguity. Can someone sue me real quick so a judge who knows fuck all about the issue can decide how I should interpret it?

Also, I keep remembering this: not voting for a team, voting for a battleground.
The battleground has not changed.

Yeah, that makes sense—like EPA mpg standards. But in this case, different by region, too, I imagine.

I suspect that if it were code, we’d find that an awful lot of folks would find it worth their while to get the skills. I think design costs were included in that low percent, which was given to me by an architect friend, @holz-bau.bsky.social.

I’m told the premium for meeting passive house standards is now about 2-3% (insulation is cheap compared to most building materials), so it’s horrifying to me that this isn’t required by code. (So much) better for the tenants, and for the planet.

We may get there—meanwhile, carbon emissions are going gangbusters, and for every renewables leap, there's new tech that hoovers up the extra power.
Blue sky is good, but we can't let the very real victories obscure the necessity of RAPIDLY SHUTTING DOWN FOSSIL FUEL USE. Because tipping points.

It's not that simple, nor is it either/or.
Also, if you're saying that concern over planetary/civilizational instability is lesser than the "magic of the market", then, um....just no.

We have so much work to do in pressuring governments/companies to actually reduce FF use & deforestation, changes to ag., etc.

Alas, it doesn't work that way—too many sunk costs, and (even more), not enough PROFIT in renewables.
Amazon is likely about to claim 100% renewables for its power, but it's mostly REC's, and their actual emissions are 40% over what they were at the 2019 Climate Pledge moment. B/c growth.

I would NOT want the bottom left one looking at me each time I went home. But I suspect it would deter break-ins!

"If the top 1 percent of income earners in America just paid all the federal income taxes they owed, we could raise an additional $175 billion a year. That’s 38 times what it would cost to provide a bed to every person experiencing unsheltered homelessness in America."
