The stories of the “atomic veterans” are absolutely horrifying. They suffered debilitating illnesses and premature deaths, as did their children. This happened in the US, UK, and many other places.
Like the Natives on test islands, and Downwinders, they have been ignored. Crimes against humanity.
Studs Terkel's "The Good War" is full of stories from every type of person affected by the horrors of WWII, but the ones about the US servicemen who were unwitting test subjects for the effects of fallout and then (thru the 1980s) totally ignored by the gov when they got sick were some of the worst
Speaker of the house (and major hoofwanking bunglefuck) Rep Mike Johnson, is refusing to bring a bipartisan senate bill to provide healthcare to members of the Navajo nation that were routinely exposed to radiation from nuclear tests
Also includes the Marines who went into Hiroshima after the blast. Uncle had a cancer never documented anywhere in the world. Doctors linked it to his radiation exposure.
Went to a protest at the Western Shoshone reservation right next to the underground nuclear testing site in Nevada. The testimony of the down winders was heartbreaking .
I've written about some of these atomic vets and the testing. It's so messed up. It wasn't until 1990 that even the bare minimum of measures and benefits were given. Absolutely shameful. taskandpurpose.com/history/army...
France was also testing like crazy.
I worked in WMD field for government.
There is nothing worse out there than radiation poisoning. A couple biologicals and chemicals come close.
My great-grandpa was a welder at LLNL from the time it opened and I'm pretty sure he got cancer from the stuff he worked on. He ended up living into his 90s.
My high art teacher’s dad was at this test as a sailor and died of eye and brain cancer before he hit 60. They were told that they could look at it if they wanted and he did.
