A total ban is the only sane policy for Airbnb. There obviously needs to be accommodation in cities for visitors, but that shouldn’t be at the expense of housing units for people who actually live there. More governments should follow Barcelona’s lead.

I am at a place in my life where I have friends I would like to see and a job I really love doing! I have also just had Covid! 5, 7, 10 days — It’s awesome that there is no consistent guideline on when I can actually return to seeing my friends and the job that I like!

I have spent a lot of my life anticipating one major disaster or another, and when Covid hit, I found it was a completely different kind of fear and dread than I had been expecting. Fear and dread becoming a kind of background radiation in my life, rather than constant panic.

I joke a lot about my capacity for despair, but there's enough Catholic discipline in my youth to remember that it is in fact a sin, one that absorbs all the best in you more comprehensively than a tar pit. I left the church ages ago, but I held onto that cable: despair is not a long-term good.

I’m just so pleased that the court decided homeless people can be arrested for existing, the government cannot govern, and the president cannot be prosecuted for committing crimes, all in the same week. Blitzkrieg doesn’t begin to cover what has happened to the rule of law.

Historically, it has been. Horror movies are pretty cheap to make compared to other genre films (karo syrup and red food dye aren't expensive). Plus a lot of people writing "how to make films" books worked during the VHS boom of the 80s/90s where any crappy horror movie could get distribution.

A lot of these are people who have never made a movie before. Maybe they made one with their friends, or while getting a film degree, but that’s it. For some reason, they’re almost always horror movies. I think a lot of new filmmakers think that would be the easiest movie to make, for some reason.
