Becca Rothfeld goes big: lit crit, the soul death of Marie Kondo, how the flesh makes you crazy, why it's understandable to eat three plates of pasta in a row, sex for its own sake, wanting to BE a particular novel, and why screwball comedies are sex.

Very gratifying to finally knuckle under and get some deadlines done. Not complaining, since it was my own fault for letting them go, but still. You get 'em done, and you keep moving forward. Quite a few things coming up soon, and I'm looking forward to sharing them.

For me, I can't sit down and say to myself "I am going to write now." It just doesn't work. Instead, I start with something I'm sure of that I want to say and then I just get busy typing. Then the writing is in the rewriting.

My take on the great Gus Van Sant movie which went admittedly went over my head in 1995 and has been recently given the Criterion rollout.

I'll say this for the Greatest Generation: there was an assumption of self sacrifice for the greater good. Maybe the Great Depression forced that, I don't know. But I think this gets overlooked. It's a powerful rebuke to the right's Rand-like obsession with selfishness.

this is part of the problem-- lots of people immediately need to point out the flaws of the ND (and liberalism generally) and they are absolutely right to, and they need to be acknowledged, and then we can say ok so when we try it all over again we will not do that again.

it's true, and it's something ND liberals should admit, acknowledge, and work to make sure doesn't happen again.

Massive federal investment under probably the most left wing admin of the 20th C, who won 4 elections in a row by good margins (and yes absolutely did some terrible things as well) beat fascism, saved us from the Depression, and laid the groundwork for midcentury prosperity.

Guarantee this is a better read than any of the 1,000 purely speculative and deeply stupid "What Trump's Conviction Means for November" pieces that every major media outlet seems intent on grunting out today.

specifically, falsifying business records in order to cover up a story of him coercing a woman into sex, which he didn’t want coming out because he had just been caught on tape talking about committing sexual assault habitually, that’s important to add

@matthansonaf.bsky.social writes that Gary Clark Jr's new album, "JPEGRAW," could be seen as an orchard whose far-reaching sonic branches — nurtured by the rich, fertile, and ancient soil of the blues — stretch into jazz, hip hop, and funk. artsfuse.org/292398

Matt Hanson writes that "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" was the only record of the Flaming Lips he knew in any real depth; it turns out that the band’s live show was heartwarming, a buoyant and visually exuberant experience. artsfuse.org/291304/

I hope the chasmic differences between Trump and Biden's judicial appointees reenters the 2024 conversation soon because I personally think we should, as a voting public, spend much more time thinking about the judges who will effectively rule us for the next 30 years.

Safe states, either red or blue, aren’t safe as a fact of the universe. They’re safe because people get out there and actually do the thing. California isn’t a blue state because it is decreed, it’s a blue state because a shitload of people vote blue.
