i swear to god. people will spend eight goddamn years complaining about how friendly the new york times is to donald trump and then just... keep accepting their framing. apparently forever. it's a provincial newspaper run by a sixth generation failson. have some self respect

This is one of those places where I wonder if his rhetoric depresses his potential turnout as supporters decline to turn out since it’s rigged anyway.

Other way around I think, 50% of respondents who didn’t vote in 2020 chose Trump.

Right, I get the “high propensity voters have switched” thing, it just kind of seems like there’s an implicit “therefore low propensity voters have switched the other way, probably even more”

The argument I guess is that turnout benefit has totally switched, but I don’t know that that 100% follows from dems starting to do better in midterms and specials.

Yeah, why have special elections gone how they have, and why would the people that have made them go as they have somehow be ok with letting Trump win?

Plus just…the baseline is the last election because it was between the same two guys. What’s the argument for the electorate having changed so enormously in this way? It goes so against my perceived experience that I need an explanation.

Man I genuinely cannot picture an electorate materializing that looks anything like this. I just don’t get it.

That’s different from baldly asserting he can’t perform acceptably because he is incapable! Worry is one thing. I’m worried! All the time! What you said was *certainty*,

What about the ones he did?
Well he used a teleprompter so those don’t count.

Yeah, that’s why the goalposts shift each time, because the real ask, that people can’t bring themselves to say outright, is for Biden to be something he can’t be.

If Biden winds up staying in, will Max shut up about all this and get behind him because Trump is such a threat? I would like to believe so but I genuinely don’t know.

There’s room for debate about the question of how to move forward, but what Max is doing isn’t that. He has not reasoned himself into the opinion that Biden is not capable (or what? Of everything), and no matter what he does the goalposts will shift so it wasn’t good enough.

So that's kind of what I'm wondering about. If you do that for everybody and compare to how long they actually live after the presidency, what do you see? Is it true that the presidency ages you, like as in taking years off your life?

Oh for their cohort for sure. Absolutely. I just wondered if solely compared to other presidents, if ones who became ex-presidents earlier in life lived longer compared to their expectancy than ones who became ex-presidents later.

Or that Haley, had she won the nomination, would be cruising to a double digit victory, rather than trying to hold together a shattered caucus as Trump, from the outside, took a sledgehammer to its supports.

To be more clear, I think it's kind of a fascinating question and I read Amar's paper on it a while back and I'm pretty convinced that the 1947 Act is not constitutional, but I genuinely don't know what would happen then.

I think recent SCOTUS decisions have actually pretty conclusively settled this question. If the Speaker is a Republican, then the 1947 PSA is constitutional.

This is true, I just wonder whether there's a relationship between the number of expected years left at the age they leave office and the average number of years they actually live. Probably not enough data points to say anything.

Right, it ages you and probably more so the older you happen to be. I wonder if you run the numbers whether that bears out.

I'm pleased to see people are opening to the idea of Kamala Harris at the top of the ticket. We're riding with Biden as long as he wants to run, but I'll be happy to support VP Harris if she's our nominee.
(Spare my your "she's a cop" responses. Logically she's the only choice if Joe steps down.)

Yeah, this is where I'm at. I think in the back of my head maybe switching things up can calm this down (maybe not, I don't know), but I bristle at everybody projecting their second-order reasons for believing what they believe onto unnamed others.

Obviously this is what I want to be the case, so there's some cope, but this does not look like a situation where there's a whole lot of toss up undecided voters, and I think most non-Trump voters ultimately come home to the only viable non-Trump option.

To me seeing a small but pure Biden drop, no switching, is a pretty decent sign. It looks like Trump is at a ceiling and nobody who already wasn't going to vote for him is switching to him, and a lot of the rest could be discouragement or nonresponse.

This is the real FEC website. I tried changing the number at the end of the URL and got different filing documents, poking around to see if there were other filed documents with other vice presidents (could that be done? I don't know how these things are done). I didn't see any but I only poked.

This is glib, obv. But the real sure part is how the GOP is the modern incarnation of the confederacy and we’re sitting here arguing with each other instead of focusing on firing them into the sun.
