“They want to eliminate national parks” is a very simple way to get just about anyone on the Stop Project 2025 train. Are there much more glaring and life-threatening goals of P25? Yes but even your most bigoted cousin does not want to see the parks system sold for parts.

This!! Start with “they want to end no fault divorce, sell national parks, and ban porn” end with tax structure.

I actually pronounce it both ways. I tend to use rhymes-with-microfiche for “obscure interest”, and rhymes-with-Mitch for “wall cubby”. “A lifeform’s place in its environment” could go either way.

It’s not just about getting the franchise. In the US, blacks got the right to vote with the 15th Amendment in 1870. However, starting in 1890 many states passed Jim Crow voting laws that didn’t mention race but effectively made it much harder for blacks to vote.

Does Canada have a long history of using pointless requirements or twisting the law to make it harder for marginalized groups to vote? The US does, which makes quite a few people suspicious about adding more requirements to vote.

And she took 10 minutes to make it to the stage. Would have been hilarious if she didn’t choose to appear, but good on her for finally standing up there (assuming there weren’t any actual issues).

Also, it turns out the President pro tempore is actually voted on by the Senate - it just traditionally goes to the longest serving member in the majority party. It’s currently Patty Murray; Leahy retired after 2022. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preside...

Oh, right. I forgot about that. On January 6, though, isn’t a new Congress in session? So (a) I’m wondering how Grassley was still PPTem on 1/6/21 (was it just that Pence was the tiebreaker & thus the GOP still controlled the Senate?) And (b) there’s no guarantee who would be PPTem on 1/6/25.

It’s also one of the reasons I think replacing Harris as VP mid-term would be very, very hard. It needs to get approved by a majority of both houses of Congress, and you’d have to convince Republicans to move Johnson back into his second-in-line spot.

He wouldn’t be VP though, just next in line for the presidency. I honestly don’t know who the President of the Senate would be in the absence of a vice president.

Damn it, I thought it was just the Senate, but it looks like you’re right. 25th Amendment, Section 2: Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

What the heck is going on with dreams the last few days? You’re like the third person I’ve seen in the last few minutes to have had weird dreams in the last 48 hours or so, and then I have to add my own on top of it.

I had a weird dream the other night, and for some reason I woke up and wrote myself a reminder to look up a dice game played by UK members of parliament. I have absolutely no idea what that means. I blame the Paxlovid.

I’m torn. On the one hand, the Panthers are a bunch of thugs. Canada also deserves to get a Cup after this long of a drought. On the other hand, my dad has bad memories of the Oilers ending the Islanders’ reign in the 80s, and seeing the Canadian drought continue would be hilarious.

Deer repellent sprays like Liquid Fence help, though they’re not perfect. You may have to rotate brands or add stuff like spearmint oil* as they seem to build a tolerance. Good high fencing or an electric fence is also helpful for an enclosed plot. *or peppermint oil, I don’t remember which.

Two points to add: 1. Providing your zip code can be helpful, both to confirm you’re a consituent & give them more granular data for larger constituencies (like a full state) 2. Calling politicians who you’re not a constituent of reportedly has much less impact.

If you’re their constituents, call and calmly let them know your stance on the issue; might mention that it’s important to you come voting time but that’s not the biggest goal. It’s just letting them know what the public’s stance on a given issue is. The rough assumption is 1 caller = 10 voters.
