In 1924, the local American Legion post of WWI vets invited him for his 80th birthday Invited to speak, he harangued them for not being real soldiers because modern war was for wimps - evidence that older generations always call the next gen weak The WWI vets gave him a standing ovation

The aide who had commissioned the painting was 19yo Capt. David Shields of Sewickley, PA, who later commissioned the painting. He was wounded in 1864 at the age of 20, around the same time Hays was killed. Shields recovered and returned home, living to the age of 93

Hays' aides followed his lead, as depicted in the 1910 painting above. In one account, Hays tied a reb flag to his horse's tail, as well. Every regiment in his division noted this ride, as Hays was cheered by his men and fired at by angry Secesh. Who missed.

Right about now, in 1863, came one of my favorite moments of the Battle of Gettysburg. Division commander Maj Gen Alex Hays, of Pittsburgh, seeing that his division had smashed the rebel attack, kissed his aide-de-camp, grabbed a reb flag, mounted his horse, and rode his line dragging it behind him

"I believe that not one above whom it then waved but blessed his God that he was loyal to it, & whose heart did not swell with pride towards it as the emblem of the Republic before that treason's flaunting rag in front." - Maj Frank Haskell - watching Lee's Whoopsie begin

We can have this moment at two o'clock on July 3. "But along the lines in front the grand old ensign that first waved at Saratoga in 1777, & which these people coming would rob of half its stars, stood up, and the west wind kissed it as the sergeants sloped its lance towards the enemy."

William Faulkner - who lied about his World War I service - can keep his "For every Southern boy fourteen years old, not once but whenever he wants it, there is the instant when it's still not yet two oclock on that July afternoon in 1863" moment on July 3, 1863. For Northern kids...

Happy "Robert E Lee Yeets 3 Treason Divisions Into a Deathblossom" Day to all who celebrate Lee's July 3d might be one of his worst days of fighting. Starts off the day with the XII Corps kicking his teeth in on the right flank, booting his bubbas out of US trenches they'd taken the night prior

However, if you're referring to tactical innovation, then you're spot on. At the regimental level and below, units innovated and experimented with different ways to maximize equipment and tactical effects. Some worked, some didn't, but lots got passed up and around as lessons learned

Please cite a reliable scholarly source, because this has long been proven to be a myth. During WWII, tactical doctrine was fire and maneuver to find, fix, and destroy an enemy. Which is what divisions and corps did, while Army groups worked to cut off retreating Nazi formations.

They don't, actually. Schools are very selective about the information they give recruiters. Many don't allow them in at all. Recruiting policy and regulations are pretty clear on what is and isn't allowed to be shared

When I think about what was sacrificed on this day in 1863 for this Republic, and what meaning Lincoln gave it... Government of the people By the people And for the people And then I read the news. Sigh.

Race is still factored in. White applicants get to keep the advantages they've accrued through systemic racism without any countervailing forces.

Poolside thought, reading some WWI stuff The Army leaned really heavy on cav units during the GWOT, esp in Afghanistan, for some crazy intense missions And now are just like "thx, bye" to cav units in general Add it to the long "things the GWOT ruined that we won't talk about" list

Sadly, the damage and devastation of the battle left Abraham Bryan unable to resume his farm and the government did not honor his request for damages. He was unable to maintain the farm and sold it.
