i have a piece up at @floppyadult.com's new site @vgbees.com about the legacy of Japanese PC RPGs from the 80s and 90s! since i wrote this, a few more have been made available on the switch via EGGCONSOLE, which rules vgbees.com/the-hidden-l...
E.V.O. is one of my favorite games for all its issues so learning that it's actually a kind of remake/sequel to an even weirder game on the PC-98 was incredible. still need to play 46 Okunen Monogatari: The Shinkaron
It really does irritate me just how much the non-american side of PC gaming is treated. There was such a thriving scene in PC gaming in the Europe during the late 80s to early 90s, and all of it just gets ignored completely
Rad article, extremely well written, and I appreciate the focus on lesser-known games of the era (at least to my knowledge). youtube.com/@basementbro... is where I’ve seen most of the things I know about.
Really fascinating article, and a great primer for the subject! I’d not really known a lot about Japanese computer games, and knew only a little more about the hardware they ran on. You’ve given me a new rabbit hole to dive into. 🙂
love this article, also it reminds me of how one of my favorite '80s/'90s japanese video gamey things is Ancient Lore Carvings in this kind of style, which maybe started with nausicaa? and then like, la-mulana and various zeldos kept running with
