My next big writing project is now 12 pages long. It’s a slow start but it feels very good.

I find that my favorite font to write in is Garamond. Unlike other fonts which make me feel like I'm writing an undergrad paper, there's something about these serifs which really make me feel like I'm writing a book.

This month marks the 167th anniversary of the New York Police Riot in which the city's *two* competing police departments, Municipal & Metropolitan engaged in very ethnically-motivated and deadly brawling openly in the street. 🧵

Eventually, the state Supreme Court ordered the majority-Irish Municipal police be disbanded. When the Mayor of New York refused, the crisis only ended when the Metropolitan police had to storm his office to arrest him. Read more about it in my book! Police and the Empire City!

Fearing the power the Municipal PD had because it was majority Immigrant & Catholic, the State of New York undermined the city by creating the Metropolitan PD which was majority Anglo, Dutch, and protestant. The two departments (and their ethnically aligned street gangs) battled.

This is VERY cool. CSPAN turned the interview I did about the history of government surveillance and turned it into a teachable lesson, with discussion questions, for their Tech Social Studies curricula.

DHS’ new “AI Corps” reflects "federal law enforcement's insistence on spending money on the newest shiniest toy regardless of whether or not it has compelling use cases, proves ineffective, or threatens civil liberties," EFF’s @mguariglia.bsky.social told @reason.com.

Not sure if I announced it on here, but this fall I'll be the National Governing Institutions Fellow at the Library of Congress in support of a book project I'm working on tracing the federal government's constantly growing capacity to store information on individuals from Civil War pensions to AI.

I wish people who consider themselves measured but are still concerned about crime would realize that a city spending millions on surveillance is a placebo. They want to seem proactive but there's no reliable theory as to how surveillance addresses the root causes of crime.

Obligatory monthly pitch! I wrote a book about how considerations of race, immigration, and empire shaped policing as we know it and explains the roots of contemporary issues like Cop City, militarization, international police trainings, AI & surveillance, etc.

Talk about the need to think of “safety” holistically. Not dying of heatstroke is safety to. Who is thankful for the massive expenditure for police robots or armored cars when there is no A/C in designated cooling places? Heat effects more people than mugging ever could.

Let the record reflect that I tried to play a video game this weekend for the first time in 15 years but I couldn’t get it to run on my computer. This is why my hobby remains quasi-academic writing.

You know what your dad might like as a gift? A history of the New York City Police Department which will slowly convince him that policing was created for racial/gendered/class management and in concert with imperialism and that it cannot be changed.

If there's nothing better to do on a summer day, CSPAN interviewed me about how a historian ends up working in technology policy, my research, and a lot of other questions about the inner workings of old & cutting-edge racialized policing & surveillance.

Excited that I'm teaching one course in Emory's History Department in Spring 2025! Called "Information and Power in the United States" and it will cover the U.S. government's growing capacity to store information on individuals and how it (mis)uses it from the passport to mass surveillance.
