Was at a party last night & a friend who I hadn’t seen in awhile came up to me excitedly saying, “I’ve been reading this brilliant newsletter and telling all my friends about it! It’s by @hcrichardson.bsky.social do you know her?” She + her friends talk about it frequently. They live in purple AZ.

It is so muggy you can go out with a bath towel today and it would be soaked when you came home.

No coincidence that Robinson is using the same "you made us do it" rhetoric as Kevin Roberts--it's a textbook strategy for persuading people to get over their moral scruples and just do it.

If you’ve never seen Dorothea Lange’s photographs of the World War II internment camps and the Japanese-Americans who were imprisoned there, today is a good day to see them and to commit to making sure this never happens again.

Just to be really explicit about what’s happening here, the cover conflates age, physical disability, and cognitive disability, and goes on to conflate disability with unfitness for office. It’s utter bullshit.

Not to be corny but I do think the ongoing aspiration to make America a pluralist democracy of equals is righteous, beautiful, and worth honoring, even if it has more often been the struggle of minorities & dissenters than the policy of the government. 🇺🇸

Over at the Bad Place, I made a tradition of posting Douglass' "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth of July," and I intend to carry on that tradition here. Since most versions you read in classes or in textbooks have parts omitted, the link below has the full text of the speech.

As a constitutional scholar, I am well aware of the serious headwinds and challenges facing the US on the nation's birthday. It will be bad, whatever happens in the Fall elections. But I also know enough US history that resistance is not futile and we have many historical models of it.

The Declaration of Independence was a series of grievances the colonists enumerated against King George III. The colonists wrote the document explaining why they were breaking away. There are a few line items having to do with colonial dissatisfaction with migration policies. (1/12)

It would not be as big as the Torys annihilated, but a few weeks ago I submitted my complete manuscript, The Politics of Mobility-Voluntary and Involuntary Migrations, 1619-1882, to Oxford University Press after 15 years of work on it. The book is about US migration policy history. #GoodNews

Colonies were also concerned about non-slave domestic insurrections. Colonists viewed their migration policy as a part of their police power ability to protect the public peace and they resented British interference from afar. (12/12)

Britain also vetoed the colonies taxing slave importations. Colonies taxed not out of concern for enslaved people but because of fears of slave insurrections, esp. in colonies w/ large numbers of enslaved people. Hence the line, "He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us" (11/12)

The Proclamation line prohibited white colonists from entering Native territory. That infuriated colonists who believed the land was for them as a reward for fighting the Seven Year's War for Britain. Their rage explains the line, "and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands." (10/12)

Trying to reduce the huge expense of frequent military conflict between the British and powerful Native alliances, King George III issued the Proclamation of 1763, attempting to draw a line separating the colonists and Native American territory that the French had claimed. (9/12)

Migration on to Native land also became a flash point between the colonists & Britain. At the conclusion of the 7 Years War fought between Britain and France in North America in 1754-1763, Britain gained formerly French claimed land that was also claimed by Native people. (8/12)

When the King and Parliament tried to restrict colonies' ability to quickly and easily naturalize foreigners, the colonist were angered.
