Look. I care about climate change a lot. I'm close to a single-issue voter on the subject! But we have GOT to stop worrying about what are, in the scheme of things, rounding errors. I hate, hate, hate this kind of personal-responsibility climate stuff, it's deeply counterproductive.

Appreciate the caution against anti-semitism but I am not sure that's how evil works. It will look for the lowest, most attainable level and it will seek out traction. With climate, scarcer resources, & already crumbling boundaries, my bet is that immigrants and refugees will be the easiest target.

I think going after Jews for things around the crucifixion points up so many of the weakness of tourist Christianity. 1) It's lazy and a way to avoid imperial critique 2) Jesus comes off as exceptional when it was really written as a form of solidarity--for other Jews!!! 3) And JESUS WAS A JEW!!

All that makes me read the piece with the eyes of . . . yeah, but he is approaching this issue with a ton of cultural overlays that already have him biased against activism. For example, is Greta an activist? Not made a powerful difference? Or is she only an activist when we identify with her?

I hear that. But I operate in the church which already has a bias against activism (don't do political; averse to confrontation) & dealing with a media that regularly de-platforms progressive activism in favor of State messages. Plus, ffi is invested in making us believe that activism doesn't work.

Problem is that leading studies have shown that civil disobedience doesn't work until it does. Told that divestment would not work in South Africa and that it wasn't working. Then it did. Same in East Germany. Same with civil rights. The revolution will not be televised is part of the problem.

It is really frustrating to hear people call "doomers" those who see, in the scientific evidence a trajectory that does not predict human survival. Do the "doomers" then have license to call "romantics" those who still tout hope? Don't we have to do this together recognizing science can know both?
