I'm 50/50. I think this stuff lacks political salience until it suddenly does a lot of the time, and what makes it salient often looks completely nuts to you and me. But if you're just in a despair/K-hole, no thanks, I'm driving.

In that case I think you would see the power abused inevitably. Whether it was retracted after the war? Well, now that's the question. My guess is that it might be folded into the presidential war powers... but that's still a huge bomb waiting to go off.

The hope is clearly that SCOTUS will have ultimate oversight, by only choosing to grant that immunity selectively to a Republican president. This... does not seem like a smart gamble on their part. We could easily end up in a shooting civil war under a Democratic president with a 5-4 liberal court.

It's gonna be incredible because my suspicion is they'll just go "twelve-year-olds, dude" and pull the blue lever and that's that. Simple heuristic beats complicated double-bluff reverse autofellatio with a half-twist from people who still coast on their SAT scores.

Let me try to put my cards on the table and lay out where I'm at re: Biden bowing out and the race in general. #1: I am bewildered by how many different factions are hostile to Biden and how bad the polls have been. In my view, he's a pretty good president (certainly better than I expected).

If all you do is watch old movies and read _very_ selective memoirs by people who had it easy, you'll miss a lot! But the actual economic history of the 1920s feels strikingly familiar for a reason; the _trend_ was up, a lot of people got screwed.
