In my defense, I'm in an airbnb with a sick toddler and have basically nothing to do during said toddler's naps besides doomscrolling.

you are not crazy, this is an entirely true statement that many, many more people need to print out, tape up to their mirror, and ground themselves with every morning. it is fucking JULY. everybody needs to pop an edible and calm the fuck down.

#7: the press's fixation on this, to the exclusion of necessary coverage of Trump's looming fascism, make me so angry I have to go lie down.

#6: so anyway that adds up to thinking that we need to keep Biden and power through, but I am less confident of that than I was a week ago. I am also more confused by the dynamics at play.

#5: Harris is the only plausible nominee if it's not Biden. I do not have good vibes about how the press will treat Harris

#4: my instinct is that dumping your nominee, especially if your nominee is an incumbent president, has enormous political costs that outweigh whatever advantage you might get from a different candidate. I don't actually know if this is right and neither does anyone else.

#3: I am starting to worry that the media feeding frenzy on this has its own momentum and reasons to exist and will persist even in the absence of any supporting facts.

#2: I do worry about how well he'll be able to do the job by the end of his term if he wins. 86 is old. That said, he seems to have been doing the job without serious problems from his age up til now.

So given that I think Biden is producing better results than Obama was in 2012, why is there this momentum to get rid of him? I don't understand.

This isn't meant as an unskew the polls thing, it's to say that my general instincts about how politics works are missing something (or maybe the polls are, idk)

He's also an incumbent president running against somebody who has been extremely unpopular for his entire political career and who is currently a convicted felon. I don't understand how Biden is trailing.

The economy is pretty good, albeit with some large asterisks, the crime spike is receding, inflation is receding, things are vastly better re COVID, and he's accomplished some awesome stuff re: climate and labor.

Let me try to put my cards on the table and lay out where I'm at re: Biden bowing out and the race in general. #1: I am bewildered by how many different factions are hostile to Biden and how bad the polls have been. In my view, he's a pretty good president (certainly better than I expected).

If so, the nine dimensional chess is out of hand. "we have to give the Dem nominee a bunch of bad press and ignore the Republican nominees weaknesses so that the Republican nominee will lose." Wtf?

Both from a standpoint of informing the public, reporting the truth, and simple self-preservation, their refusal to adequately cover Trump's radicalism and the immunity decision is inexcusable

I'd say very little chance of success in NY courts, but a very serious chance that SCOTUS goes the other way when the appeal reaches them. They've made it crystal clear that they want to save Trump's bacon.

Notice how everyone is somehow talking about Biden Too Old right now, and NOT about how the Supreme Court just legalized Trump being a dictator for life and gutted the administrative state, and how the Heritage Foundation is now issuing terrorist threats? Think that might not be an accident?

We’ve all watched the GOP drag rapists, criminals, florid wackos, and brain-dead white supremacists to electoral victory over and over again. Perhaps the Democrats can summon up some of that energy to save our democracy and our lives.

The Biden stuff is worrying no matter which side of the topic you’re on, but you should be terrified by Trump successfully presenting himself to the media as a reasonable centrist figure set against the violent radicalism of (checks notes) the people who are explicitly defining his governing agenda.

one of the most cowardly arguments i keep seeing from columnists is that nothing breaks through with trump supporters, so it’s a waste of time reporting on what he believes. this should be seen as a critically damning failure on behalf of the fourth estate. this means you failed. it’s not a pass.

2 of the top 3 candidates for the US presidency have shown a repeated willingness to believe any conspiracy dangled in front of them like a set of keys, including wildly anti-american ones, which are straightforward cognitive deficiencies for what we should demand in a president. neither are biden.

Yes. They are 100% going to make it impossible for any of the cases against him to proceed. The only way Trump doesn't skate is if Dems win the election by a big enough margin that they pack the court by june 2025.
