We went through this during Occupy as well. A bunch of people whose previous experience told them the cops could be reasoned with learned through brutality what the police were all about. Abolitionists in Chicago welcomed those folks into movement spaces. That’s how you handle it. Solidarity.
We should be welcoming and supporting folks who are stunned by the state violence they’ve experienced, and encouraging them to, as Mariame says, let this radicalize them rather than lead them to despair.
For a lot of these students and even the professors, the worst they've had to deal with is getting pulled over for a speeding ticket and have relied on their implicit white privilege when dealing with the cops. Quite the wakeup when that privilege evaporates!
The presumption of justice is instinctual and powerful too, and makes that first brutal boot to the teeth all the more bitter. I agree, Puff. Solidarity forever.
At Occupy they directed me to friendly food outlets & made all resources available to the police - including the food & water. The police wasn’t their enemy.
Yup
I remember intercepting a baton to the shoulder intended for a female protester next to me at Occupy
She was shocked and rightfully scared as we got outta the front lines
It is oddly satisfying to see white people discover that cops are bastards, but energy spent on mocking them is better spent mocking people who still deny that cops are bastards.
