In September 1991, on the very 1st day of the semester, my "Government and Politics of the Soviet Union" professor strode into the room, dropped a stack of books into the trashcan, and proclaimed loudly in his heavy Polish accent "Well, my friends, this is now a history class! Let's begin."

I don't think a discipline has to become irrelevant when its models are disproven. But if it refuses to update them it probably will.
