The GOP’s nominee to run the 9th most populous state just called for killing people who disagree with the far-right and that sentiment was echoed by the head of Heritage and the man behind Project 2025. But like 90% of all political news is about Democratic hand-wringing over Biden’s debate flop.

For most of its history, America hasn’t been a democracy, by any meaningful definition of the term! This isn’t some It Can’t Happen Here shit, in a way, it’s already happened. It just may not have directly affected you.

Folks: media’s bad. Biden’s not in good shape electorally or personally. Switching to Harris is a big gamble that adds uncertainty. It’s ALL true. Stop pretending it’s just one or two. And nobody can say confidently what’ll happen if they stick w/ Biden, or go with Harris.

At best it lasted from 1965-2000. Even then we had widespread gerrymandering, Senate malapportionment, unequal voting access, Jim Crow ex-felon voting bans, etc. 7 of 12 elections since 2000 have seen Republicans win one or more of the presidency, Senate, or House despite fewer votes than Democrats

Hard to distinguish whether Trump uniquely has these effects, or if he is just rhetorically & behaviorally different from prior presidential candidates (and therefore others adopting those could yield similar results).

In retrospect maybe decades of saturation in American cowboy and superhero fiction - in which solo vigilantes (fed up with incompetence and malice of public servants) work outside of government or the law to single handedly restore order - weren’t such a good idea…

It's a bit like physics, where we can practically assume the reality of things at the macro level, but at the micro level, quantum probability means nothing is certain. Or maybe endogeneity is a better way to think of it. There's solidity to language that guides us, but we also change language.

The piece pretends (i.e., gives Trump a giant benefit of the doubt) that Trump has settled on abortion policy that conflicts with his base. Trump, according to the piece, wants to "leave it to the states" and the Christian right/anti-abortion groups want national ban + personhood amendment. 2/x

This is marvelous. Class action alleges Walmart systematically puts one price on the shelf, and charges a little more at the cash register. Walmart claims consumers can see the prices actually charged, so no harm. CA7 rejects.

The other thing is that it’s so lawless a decision that it cannot be respected as precedent. It feels like a Supreme Court that succeeds this one should ignore its rule against advisory opinions to immediately overturn this one without waiting for a case to come up to do it.

fundamentally being in the majority on Trump v US is immediately disqualifying for a supreme court justice. it declares yourself in opposition to the foundations of the American project of democracy and limited government. all six of them must be impeached and replaced.
