not sure this is a useful conversation, but if you insist, YouGov, next week, whatever puts him at higher favorability than Trump

Like, just got to be blunt here: if the message is not getting through to the voting public, then there is a problem. Everything else is just how to get there

If there was a straw anonymous poll in the D party today, it would be overwhelmingly for him to resign. Last week, I don't think so. Today they would.

The time between now and the DNC is roughly the same amount of time the UK had for its *entire* election season. It sucks, and I absolutely do not minimize the difficulty in climbing this mountain, to drop your candidate, but there *is* time if they do it now, but not time to delay it much further

Yes. And ... not just in the wider party. Staff! Senior staff! *Current* staff! Like, sure, they're not putting their names on it in the newspapers because doing that is resigning, but I think folks are missing that this is very much not just a little social media storm. It's actually pretty serious

Right. If folks want to say it's overblown, go for it. But the concerns here are plainly real, and plainly coming from a lot of folks who are concerned /because they are terrified of Trump winning/, not just trying to kneecap Biden or quietly pro-Trump folks, or a bit of a social media freakout

Their atrocious campaigning means they are always on the back-foot, and that's precisely why we're here. He's the President of the United States. Not just a little baby being bullied in the playground by meanies in the media. He has a lot of scope to aggressively change the narrative

I want him to correct it! Nobody can force him out. But if he cannot or will not, that is his error, not just staff-level problems

They absolutely should do that, and the best way to do that is to end the question of him being too old. He needed to settle it urgently so folks can move on to the question that actually matters

My point is the error in the campaign /becomes/ the error of the candidate if he is not willing to replace campaign folks making those errors and course-correct the campaign itself

At a certain point, the campaign fucking up and the candidate fucking up are not really usefully distinguishable if the candidate is not able or willing to course-correct the campaign

A better campaign would understand that the debate was a fiasco and their campaign is currently on life-support, and respond to it with the urgency that requires. It's not about one thing here or there to "fix it" and move on. It's that they're in real trouble, and not responding to it urgently

I think when half your campaign and party leaders are leaking to the press that they're shitting bricks, and you're not putting it to bed with some urgency, there's a problem that's a lot bigger than a few folks on social media thinking the sky is falling

And to be very clear here: it would be great if they are right, and do back-to-back interviews suddenly with a re-energized campaign showing all of America that Uncle Joe is fine on his feet and running with the full force and energy this campaign needs. I would very much love them to do that.

He and his team says it is wrong. I think they're wrong. But all I am saying is if they are right and I am wrong, they have a very easy path ahead of them to prove it to everyone, and if, on the flipside, that is not the case, then they need to call time on this farce and swap him for Harris asap

i think akhil amar reed captures something very important, which is that the roberts court rewrote article ii, which explicitly states that a president can be held criminally liable after impeachment (and which has long been understood to mean that he can be held liable after leaving office)

impeachment, tho they (and she) should publicly talk about taking the House being necessary (both because it is, and because without it, the bill vanishes; it won't even get to a debate or a vote in the House)

Like, to the extent he was willing to go for it (which he is not) he'd need to lean into it being a restoration of the constitutional checks and balances this Court has decided to abandon, rather than an expansion for its own sake

No! Those things are great examples of /his administration/ doing those things. But *he* needs to do them, in speeches. He needs to engage with the spectacle of announcing them himself

All of which is to say: his team doesn't understand /why/ the media is bad for him, and keep retreating to their bunkers, occasionally throwing out a nothingburger speech and being surprised it gets zero traction. But if they had a better team they'd realize it is correctable with better people.

That forces the conversation to deal with the new substance, and folks start paying attention to your TV hits, and supercutting them into TikToks and instagrams and whatever, because then they are *news*. And so you both energize the base on the substance, *and* demonstrate you're up for the fight

Contrast if you use that speech to announce some big idea about what to do about it. Say, declaring that you think Thomas should be impeached, or that in light of Loper and TvUS you intend to create a new circuit and add two justices next term

If you do a TV hit for "SCOTUS said I get to be a King, and that's wrong" it's newsworthy really only to the extent you're (a) the president is saying it (b) folks are checking to see if you're still alive after the debate. Which is fine, but it'll necessarily be fairly small

Pwnallthethings's avatar Pwnallthethings @pwnallthethings.bsky.social

They need to grasp that for it to get news hits, it needs to be *news*. He needs to telegraph in advance that he'll announce something new, then do it. That's why speeches that say "my opponent is bad" or "we've done some good stuff in the past" regularly fail to get much coverage

We do, in fact, have a recent example of a presidential campaign deciding to not talk to the press, and the result was the country elected Mr Trump. You do have to actually engage with the press, even if you don't like what they have to say or think they will be mean to you.

If you're the president you can totally ignore NYT if you want to. You can totally sideline CNN. You can decide you don't want to ever speak to WaPo. Great. Go for it. You absolutely cannot run a campaign doing all of those at the same time.
