An electoral college victory is more plausible, but still a hard lift -- in 2016 Trump lost the pop vote by 3m while squeaking out an inside straight of an EC win, so he's still got to scratch together at least 4m more votes, plus get either pretty lucky or be very well-organized (which...uh...)

This is what I keep telling myself. Trump lost 2020 by 7m votes. Since then: - Dobbs - Biden is an incumbent with a good economy - Trump's become a convicted felon How is Trump supposed to *gain* 7m votes against those headwinds? Hardcore MAGA isn't nearly enough.

On the one hand, queercoding the villains is bad politics and we should stop doing that. On the other hand, it often ends up with really cool and awesome (villainous) queer characters.

(Legit question from a non-lawyer: who *do* lawyers think the brightest minds on SCOTUS are? Because while I'm a politics watcher and can make a reasonable guess at their politics, I've no idea how their jurisprudence stacks up)

And like, this entire thing is a NYT ratfuck because Sulzberger is upset at not getting an interview. Do we really, truthfully expect the NYT to be *nicer* to Harris?

I'm going to politely but firmly disagree -- Harris would lose out on the incumbency advantage, it'd escalate the 'Dems in Disarray' media feeding frenzy, and frankly, we do not live in a land where an African-American woman from California is more electable than an old white dude.

It also makes me feel insane that the rat fuck around Biden’s age and mental capacity is being uncritically spread around by Democrats when Trump is *incredibly obviously* grotesquely mentally incapacitated, in a way that is genuinely terrifying.

sticking with Biden is the obvious correct choice until and unless Biden decides otherwise, and anyone who suggests otherwise is either dishonest, an idiot, or a handmaiden of fascism.

Perhaps its cope, but the thing I keep telling myself is that Trump lost last time by 7m votes, and since then: 1) Dobbs 2) 34 felony convictions 3) Biden's gained an incumbency advantage I can't see anything outweighing that.

Also, personality cults like Trump are not known for being easily transferrable. We've seen repeatedly that 'Trumpism without Trump' is not particularly popular or successful.

There is no nice way to put it, but we do not live in an America where an African-American woman is more electable than an old white man, even setting aside all of their other characteristics. I wish we did! We absolutely do not.

I teach a six-week unit on WWII and one of the major take-aways is that the Allies, and especially the US, had more people, more money, and consequently, *more R&D*, and that while it took a while to spin that all up, once it was spinning the war was basically over.

I don't think anyone really knows what the US could do if pushed far enough -- our last real, back-to-the-wall existential war was WWII, and that ended with us dropping a small sun on our foes.

I very genuinely do not think that the Trumpists have the competence, the legitimacy, or the muscle to pull off their authoritarian plans. ...I also *really* do not want to put this to the test, since even a failed attempt would be a horror show.

That's about where I am. The Trumpists can sneak a lot of kleptocracy under the radar, but I really don't think they have the power or legitimacy to pull off an open, authoritarian coup. ...even a failed attempt would be a nightmare, however, so like, let's not press our luck.

Hmm. Kinda? Or rather... I believe young people care about Palestine. But I do not believe anyone going 'Genocide Joe' is a good-faith actor, partially because so many were virulently opposed pre-Gaza, partially because Biden is legit better on I/P than Israel, Hamas, or Trump.

Thing is, a sitting president basically never gets a contested primary because the incumbency advantages are so powerful. A 'real primary' would be a sign of extreme weakness, and probably prelude to a crushing general election loss. And like... it's been that way for decades. Not a new thing!

I used to wonder this about McConnell et al. They play games to weaken the system, but the system is also the source of their power. If things really do break, the blue areas have more people, more money, and I suspect the support of the military. It's sawing off the branch you're sitting on.

I think one can make a colorable argument for the US being unusually messed up at a structural level (mostly due to a nonfunctional congress), although the federal structure makes up for a lot of flaws. But on the level of outcomes, the UK has seen the return of *rickets*, so.... uh.... yeah.....
