But a movie? It’s more compact. So when your characters talk about a big bad who’s on screen maybe a few times, not even necessarily interacting with the protagonist, it’s easier to see an assumed future conflict in waiting. Perhaps not always as obvious as Chekov’s Sauron but even so.

You ever realize that sometimes references to characters that are infrequently seen in a story aren’t necessarily clumsy attempts at world building but actually clumsy attempts at opening the story up to serialization or at the very least a sequel? Probably easier to see in mid movies than novels.

Anyone else remember zorg dot edu? I think only one or two people I knew from "online" back in the 90s still remember it. It was a website someone set up as a joke for a year or so, managing to slip the registration past InterNIC before they tightened up the requirements on getting a .edu toplevel.
