Randomly, in case anyone needs to hear it: You can make art without trying to make it into a career. I found out long ago that while I LOVE art, trying to make it my livelihood made me miserable and led me into a ten year burnout. So now I do it for me, any success I get is just a bonus!

There's times when I regret all the lost improvement I could have made over those ten years. What would my art look like now without that gap? But that doesn't matter in the end, as I'm here now making shit and learning and my life is better with art in it than without.

Wait -- 10 YEAR Burnout!? Omg you poor soul! Q A Q Suffered from a 2 year burnout thanks to stress & trying to keep up with algorithms -- that I started feeling hopeless. Now that I draw things that truly make me happy instead of trying to appease a audience -- I feel way more creatively free.

Yup. I have a day job but I'm happiest when I can get my time to draw in thr evenings and on weekends. Helps me feel more like who I was meant to be. No regrets picking up a pen again over a decade ago

Exactly! no artist wants to hear it, but many are not suitable to make a living working as a full time artist. It's not easy and you have to love it more than anything for it to work

This is exactly my mentality. I'm gonna make art and stories I love on my terms, and use other venues and mediums to do creatives things as a career elsewhere, most likely.

Yes! I know some are well-intentioned when they say that I could make money from my drawings, I'm happy to have art be made at my own pace based on my own expression as a hobby while I focus my profession on improving a part of societal functioning based on my skills and talents. ❀️

In order to do anything professionally you require high skill and alot of sacrifice. If your aim isn't going pro you should never put pressure on yourself. It's like someone that plays basketball with his friends in his free time beating himself up because he can't play like NBA players

I’m experiencing some significant burnout right now due to this (designer at an agency). What did you transition to career-wise (if you don’t mind me asking)?

That's why I'm a mathematician that draws and not an artist that maths :D I was worried that if do art as a job I'll start hating it eventually

Thank you for this. I'm recovering from a two year hiatus myself from burnout. Trying to do things for myself for once as well. "do what you love and never work a day in your life" is such flawed advice that I cannot agree with. When I tried making money with art, it turned into something I hated.

This is exactly why I refuse to monetize any more of my hobbies. In fact I keep a few of them a secret to reduce the chance of someone talking me into doing them for money β€œjust this once”!

This is me with writing. Nobody is allowed to read my stories or poems, or see the accompanying sketches. I write for myself alone. My own satisfaction & entertainment. Everybody should have a hobby they enjoy.
