One of the highlights of last week, getting to meet Dick. He's got #nystagmus and in his 80 years had never met another person with this condition. He got to talk to me about bike advocacy in Harrisburg & I got to ask all my questions about nystagmus and bifocals!

Car dependent communities mean nondrivers can’t access healthcare👇
“Among Gen Z women, the youngest segment in our study, 16% lack access to transportation as do 14% of millennial women.”

Tonight’s NYC talk about
@nondriver.bsky.social’s “When Driving Is Not An Option” was delightful, insightful, and time well spent.

Anna Zivarts is a great voice for the intersection of transit, walking, and rolling design that’s disability aware and inclusive. Thank you :)

Taking a moment to appreciate that a central debate in Seattle’s next transportation levy is how many sidewalks the city can practically build in the next eight years. Yes, we’ve got a council focused on sidewalks!

Best part of this East York walk audit? Seeing this ‘We Are the 99 Percent’ sticker on a crossing at a stop light. Good reminder of who is walking & waiting for buses in this industrial area with little shade or sidewalks.

You don’t know how many times I’ve waited at a bus terminal or bus stop with a cranky kid and wished there was a play area…well Rabbit Transit in York, PA has it…and there’s even kid friendly art in the stroller area of the bus!

Just heard about SB 1100 from California that would prohibit employers from requiring drivers licenses for jobs where driving isn’t an essential function. Sponsored by Glendale Senator Portantino. Would love to connect to advocates working on this!

"Because we have built our transportation system around being able to drive oneself in a car, the prospect of trying to make it for a week without getting behind the wheel feels insurmountable to many of us." Kathy Wine from WVIK Quad Cities on #WeekWithoutDriving

And this is MOST communities. Very few cities have the robust public transportation infrastructure necessary for most people in them to use it solely.

"Nobody enjoys traffic congestion, myself included. But that’s literally the trade-off for focusing on density & people-oriented infrastructure. You cannot continue to make it easy to drive or park a car if you’re trying to plan for people." -Chris Comeau quoted in this excerpt from my book

"In places where there’s reliable public transit and car-less spaces, mobility and employment don’t require access to a license and a vehicle." This column is a simple and effective rebuttal to folks who like to claim that investing in alternative transportation infrastructure is not accessible.

Are there *really* that many nondrivers?
I wrote something explaining the data and why, if you care about accessible, inclusive, climate friendly communities, maybe you should embrace how many of us are poorly served by car dependency.
