My impression is itβs lack of critical mass around disciplines. Thereβs lots of interaction between New Zealanders, FWIW, but then we made a big push to get people over. Still a few at the old place, some at Mastodon. (Reminds me I have to sort out signing back into M out to reconnect thereβ¦)

Iβm not saying I donβt enjoy writersβ social media! I follow a lot of writers. This is for non-fiction, and for this one topic/book. Theyβre introducing something as (to my eyes) a "grand" observation of 'new science' Iβve been aware of since a PhD student, that naturally enough I got from others.

Iβve a science/philosophy book Iβll probably get to reading sometime, but I have this nagging feeling itβll annoy me because the authorβs threads over the way have irritated me π Worse: I found a copy at a library, but was put off because it was (literally) bent! Or curved, depending on your POV.

Poor outcomes with COVID during pregnancy in #NZ too, inline with overseas statistics.
7 times more likely for a pregnancy to end in a perinatal death when there was a confirmed COVID-19 infection during pregnancy compared to no confirmed COVID infection. (Broad 95% CI, but p < 0.01.)

FWIW: I left to bicycle tour, then live in Asia out of a backpack for a few years. Iβm used to travelling light. Nothing on my big trip after my PhD, though: carrying only a recycled fishing bag. I checked out every day so I could end up wherever. Couldnβt do that now. Or maybe I couldβ¦β¦? LOL π

I understand the feeling. Iβm packing to move at the moment. Perhaps Iβm lucky that several years ago I did a cull to pack everything into one smaller room while I travelled. That said, I have no intention of aggressively culling my many books ππ Theyβre sort-of my thing, after all π

I often thought about why the LMB is so successful. Iβve seen several articles over the years about it, complemented by a few experiences thereβsome from in my first year having an office adjacent to the directorβs π Iβd like to have stayed on; the support to do your own science was excellent.

I feel dubious about the Science Times articleβit sounds like a fantasy. On the good side, itβs prompted me to chase up on Auditory Brainstem Implants (ABIs), which I donβt nearly as much about as I should. Theyβve been around since late 1970s/early 1980s.

Similar in NZ! Also, one of my enduring early memories of travel in Asia was people avoiding walking in the sun. I remember in the baking heat seeing everyone walking in the 1.5 metre strip of shade on the side of building, avoiding the wide open spaces of sun they could be in. They cover up too.

Itβd have been good to see more shops on the ground floor of accommodation buildings, as is common in many European and Asian cities. Iβm not very keen on too many big monolithic blocks! Potentially a light rail route is in the future. And more work on the cycle paths π

*Clean air might be seen as important in hospitals as clean surfaces are. Weβve had over a century of cleaning wards, tools, etc., but much less effort on the air, and prevention of air-borne spread.

Iβve tracked vaccine, GMO, issues for a 15+ years. Thereβs always been a few people with odd ideas about reality, but the popularity of saying it now, on some social media in particular, is awful and scale of acceptance horrible. (Iβve seen a few otherwise good scientists pulled in, too.)
