Former economist and civil servant. Still a music fan and trying to return to being a cyclist.

The question is who pays? The general taxpayer or the landowners who gain a windfall from doing nothing? At the moment it is largely the former and that needs to change.

Apologies if you’ve already seen this letter. Doesn’t much look like he’s changed his views on transparency

Struggling to come to terms with his irrelevance, both personally and as a representative of a form of politics I hope never to see again.

Astonishing comment by one of Johnson’s supporters. The difference is that Starmer reshaped Labour to make it electable, Johnson condemned the Tories to years of irrelevance.

I fear that the typical Mail reader won’t appreciate the Blond Buffoon’s reference to Hayek.

Any idea on what basis Iain Martin thinks Starmer is Britain's most inherently left-wing PM ever? Because I haven't got the faintest clue what he's on about.

Labour needs to engage in a serious debate about tax reform. We need a fair and efficient system which would both raise revenue, redistribute income and wealth and help rather than hinder growth. Labour have been too willing to accept Tory framing around taxation.

Kwarteng demonstrating the same knowledge of ancient mythology as he did of economics. If I’d ****** things up as badly as he did, I’d keep my opinions to myself.

When the public are essentially conned into backing your lunatic libertarian fantasy: “Haha fuck yeah!!! Yes!!”

When the public punish you for your con: “Well this fucking sucks. What the fuck.”

Never work with children or animals. My attempted dog at a polling station photo. Too interested in all the people going in and out, making a fuss of her.

Too subtle for thid child of the sixties. It's all about suffering, pollution and warfare. Pretty accurate for today's Britain but not, I fear, a campaign song.

Redwood making a late surge to take the “reliably wrong about everything” crown away from Lilico. I assume the queue of lorries is meant to show exports surging as opposed to being held up by customs “red tape”.

I'm still unclear what they're proposing on Manchester Victoria. I assume using the junction at Newton-Le-Willows to access the Chat Moss line. Re Manchester Airport it would be good to see the southern link to Crewe actually being used.

I just don't understand the politics of telling voters to disregard the evidence of their own eyes. The roads are potholed, rivers are polluted, you struggle to access health care, bus services are often non existent, trains unreliable........

Been an explosion of Conservative posters in fields in Macclesfield which, I suspect, shows just how worried they are at losing the seat. The last few weeks have seen visits by both Rayner and Starmer.

A couple of weeks ago the Telegraph used a picture of a house on the Peak Forest Canal to illustrate a story on Macclesfield (well they're both in the north and begin with M). Yesterday I took a photograph of the house and it was displaying a Lib Dem sticker 😂

Don’t just look at fiscal policy. QE gave an enormous boost to asset prices with the consequences we’re seeing today, although I’ll grant you that New Labour loved a house price boom as well.

I thought he was saying (correctly IMO) don’t get over obsessed with fiscal rules because the demand side of the economy matters and fiscal policy has supply side effects?

The Coalition chose to target austerity at local government and the benefits system as well and sought to offset the effects with QE with consequential impacts on asset prices. Difficult to argue that Labour could/would have managed it worse, but who knows?

That’s the point that Krugman discusses. There certainly was a danger of that in Southern Europe but less so in the U.K.
