I told my wife about this and she reminded me that this happens to her when we are out at bars together etc. Even though she knows more about basketball and beer than me, men will subconsciously box her out of the conversation & even when I notice & redirect back to her, they will double back to me.
This happens to me but from the other end. I work with an all black staff and it’s just known some of our white clients prefer working with me for “reasons.”
I am not their case manager. I am not their therapist. Not even their driver. I am the IT Manager. But certain clients just feel I “get it.”
When I worked as a cashier at a hardware store there were a to of guys that would ask me questions about a power tool despite Tools dept always having staff. Eventually I realized that the guys didn't want to ask the girl in the dept even though she would have known more.
I've noticed the same thing with my partner, if they see a seemingly white person and a mexican person, they ALWAYS go to the white one (me) even if she's the only one who actually knows what's going on in the situation.
as a longtime bartender, just from the sheer volume of interactions, you really and truly get to see a lot of very specific implicit biases and assumptions on display and it’s enough to fucking drive you insane.
